    Description

Tasting Characteristics and Advice for the Pouilly-Fuissé "Grand Élevage" 2021 from Verget

    Tasting

    Appearance

The color shows a pale to golden hue, typical of a chardonnay that has seen moderate barrel aging.

    Nose

The nose reveals pronounced minerality alongside fruity notes of pear and white peach. Floral nuances and yellow-fleshed fruit emerge, joined by a subtle smoky touch and a crystalline minerality.

    Palate

The palate offers a remarkable balance between roundness and mineral freshness. Delicate tannins shape the mouthfeel, while lively acidity elegantly offsets the texture brought by aging. The wine unfolds in slow, delicate waves, revealing a distinctly mineral, saline persistence on the finish.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This Pouilly-Fuissé naturally pairs with seafood such as crab, shrimp, or sole meunière. It also wonderfully complements pike quenelles with Nantua sauce, white poultry in a creamy sauce, as well as hard cheeses such as Gruyère or washed-rind cheeses.

    Serving and Cellaring

The Pouilly-Fuissé "Grand Élevage" 2021 can be cellared until around 2033.

A Pouilly-Fuissé from the Mâconnais Combining Minerality and Roundness

    The estate

Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine Heynen, the House Verget is based in Sologny in the Mâconnais in Burgundy. This négociant structure stands out for its distinctive approach: rather than purchasing finished wines, Verget controls the entire winemaking process by buying grapes directly. Since 2016, Julien Desplans, a talented oenologist, has overseen all operations. The House has focused exclusively on fruit from the Mâconnais since 2023. Verget embodies the conviction that great chardonnays can emerge from this historically less renowned region.

    The vineyard

This Pouilly-Fuissé comes from a blend of two parcels located in Fuissé and one parcel in Vergisson. The House maintains rigorous oversight of vineyard management, intervening directly in growing practices and taking part in the harvest to determine the optimal picking date. The vines are farmed using environmentally respectful methods, with controlled yields, soil cultivation through plowing, and grass cover between the rows.

    The vintage

The 2021 vintage proved particularly challenging in Burgundy. A severe frost between April 5 and 8, with temperatures dropping to between -5°C and -6°C, damaged the buds. The vines for the Pouilly-Fuissé grand élevage suffered more from hail than from frost. Intense disease pressure required frequent interventions. At Verget, only 30% of the usual crop was produced, and production was limited to 14 cuvées instead of 30, consistently prioritizing the highest possible quality.

    Winemaking and aging

Each parcel of the Pouilly-Fuissé "Grand Élevage" 2021 was pressed and vinified separately, with active monitoring throughout pressing. The wine underwent barrel aging for approximately 12 months. The wines are aged on their lees. Aging takes place in a combination of cement tanks, stainless-steel tanks, and barrels, enabling the sought-after qualitative balance.
