Notions of pear, white flowers, citrus oil and freshly baked bread preface the 2022 Saint-Véran Terroirs de Davayé, a medium-bodied, lively and fleshy wine that's precise but charming. It includes fruit from lieu-dit Les Pommards and press juice.

    Description

The authentic expression of a great white Burgundy by Verget

    The estate

Founded in 1990 by Belgian winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens, the négociant house Verget has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy. Based in the Mâconnais, the estate stands out for its bold philosophy, favouring the authentic expression of terroir over the renown of appellations. Today, while Jean-Marie Guffens retains artistic direction, Julien Desplans has overseen production since 2016. Together, they continue a craftsman's vision built without compromise, elevating the wines of the region to the pinnacle of quality through rigorous plot-by-plot selections.

    The vineyard

This Saint-Véran comes from the commune of Davayé, located in the northern part of the appellation. The vines flourish on east-facing slopes, benefiting from ideal morning sunlight. The terroir is characterised by marl-limestone soils overlaid with clay-and-flint formations, locally known as "chailles". This cuvée is a blend from three specific lieux-dits: Les Pommards, La Côte-Rôtie and Terres-Noires. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting carried out directly in the vineyard to retain only the finest berries.

    The vintage

The year 2022 stood out for its warm and generous weather conditions. The summer season was marked by high temperatures, tempered by a timely storm at the end of June. The rainfall proved particularly beneficial for the east-facing plots. A dry spell then set in during July and August, creating mild water stress. This helped slow physiological ripening while preserving lovely natural acidity within the berries.

    Winemaking and ageing

The making of this wine begins with careful pneumatic pressing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels, mostly neutral, driven by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for four to five months in barrels before being transferred to concrete vats. This second, extended ageing phase on the lees, carried out with very little bâtonnage, encourages a reductive profile and preserves the wine's aromatic freshness.

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Saint-Véran Village "Terroirs de Davayé" 2022

    Tasting notes

    Colour
In the glass, this white wine reveals a pale yellow hue with lemony nuances, enriched by delicate golden highlights on contact with air.

    Nose
Subtle and refined, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of fresh pear, white flowers and citrus oil. With a little aeration, it reveals lovely complexity marked by hints of warm bread, almond and a saline minerality.

    Palate
The attack is lively and vibrant, carried by perfectly balanced acidity. The mid-palate unfolds flavours of stone fruit, such as white peach and yellow plum, underscored by touches of citrus zest. A subtly creamy texture coats the palate before stretching into a long, persistent and profoundly mineral finish.

    Serving and storage

To fully appreciate this wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 11 and 13°C. Decanting beforehand is advised to release its full aromatic complexity. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2034.

    Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with white-fleshed fish, scallops or richer fish such as mackerel. It will also shine alongside herb-roasted poultry, a creamy mushroom gratin, a seafood risotto or well-matured goat's cheese.
