The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel is a little shy on the nose. The palate brings Conference pear skin, lovely yeast savor, a touch of crushed white pepper and subtle depth.

The elegance and precision of a great white wine from the Wachau

    The estate

Founded in 1825, the Weingut Emmerich Knoll is an iconic figure in Austrian winegrowing. Located in the Wachau region, in Lower Austria, this family estate began selling its bottles in the 1950s. Today, the fourth generation, represented by Emmerich Knoll senior, his wife Monika, and their sons Emmerich Knoll junior and August Knoll, runs the estate. Renowned for its baroque label depicting Saint Urban, the estate cultivates around twenty hectares of vines with a minimal-intervention philosophy, producing wines of world-renowned quality.

    The vineyard

The vineyard extends over steep terraces overlooking the Danube, at the heart of the Wachau region. The vines benefit from a microclimate regulated by the river and grow on a complex geological mosaic. This cuvée comes specifically from the Loibenberg terroir, characterised by sandy loam soils and weathered rock. The estate favours a sustainable, minimalist approach, with controlled yields and exclusively hand-picked harvests to preserve the integrity of the fruit.

    The vintage

The year 2024 was marked by particularly wet weather conditions throughout the growing season. In mid-September, exceptional rainfall hit the region. Fortunately, a return to mild, dry weather right after this episode allowed the harvest to be completed successfully. Although the harvested volumes were below average, the berries reached optimal ripeness.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes are gently pressed as whole bunches, without destemming. Fermentation of the Grüner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel 2024 takes place at cool temperatures, between 20 and 23 degrees, in stainless steel tanks, using both indigenous and cultivated yeasts. The wine is then aged on the lees for at least four months, without any bâtonnage, in order to preserve all its freshness and aromatic purity.
