An American whiskey from the Pacific Northwest with exceptional wine cask finishes

Westland Distillery: innovation in American whiskey

Westland Distillery, founded in 2010 in Seattle by Matt Hofmann and Emerson Lamb, has belonged since 2017 to the French group Rémy Cointreau. This innovative distillery stands out for its use of Garry oak, endemic to the Pacific Northwest, and its unique five-malt recipe. Located in the SoDo neighborhood, it ages its casks in Hoquiam on the Pacific Coast, benefiting from an exceptional maritime climate.

Cask Exploration Wine Cask Finish: the art of wine finishing

Westland Cask Exploration - Wine Cask Finish, Batch No. 1 is a bold exploration of wine cask finishes. This limited series showcases five distinct types of wine cask finishes: Tempranillo, Washington Red Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petit Verdot.

The process begins with a rigorous selection of five specific malts, fermented with a Belgian yeast for 96 to 144 hours. After an initial maturation of 5 years in new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, the whiskey benefits from a finishing period in casks that previously held these exceptional wines.

This innovative approach in the Cask Exploration series reflects Westland’s desire to explore the interactions between American whiskey and wine influences, creating a unique flavor profile that marries distilling tradition with Oregon winemaking know-how.
