The richness of an old-vine Tinto Fino from Ribera del Duero
The estate
Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos was founded in 1999 through the partnership of oenologist Mariano García, former technical director of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, then director of the appellation. It is based in Quintanilla de Arriba, in the province of Valladolid, in Castilla y León. The Masaveu and Nozaleda families joined as shareholders in 2006. The estate controls old Tinto Fino vines spread across several villages of the appellation.
The vineyard
This Ribera del Duero wine comes from selected plots within the appellation. It is made mainly from very old vines, trained as bush vines (en gobelet). These old vines naturally produce low yields. They grow in the continental climate of Ribera del Duero, with its cold winters, hot summers and cool nights. The Pagos Seleccionados cuvée is made only in vintages judged to be of exceptional quality.
Winemaking and ageing
For this Aalto PS, the grapes are harvested by hand into small crates. Each bunch is then inspected one by one on the sorting table. The bodega is equipped with a cold room to chill the grapes. It is gravity-fed and has concrete, wooden and stainless steel tanks. Ageing takes place in new French oak barrels.
Grape variety
This Spanish wine is 100% Tempranillo.
