    Description

Tasting Notes and Recommendations for Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2022

    Tasting

    Appearance
This Italian red wine reveals a deep ruby colour, subtly highlighted with garnet hues at the edge of the glass.

    Nose
Intense and complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of black fruits such as blueberry and blackberry, harmoniously blended with notes of cherry. The whole is enhanced by a balsamic touch, mineral nuances of damp earth and subtle woody notes.

    Palate
Juicy, fresh and crisp, the palate offers a lovely tension carried by deep, saline tannins. The remarkably long finish lingers on flavours of fresh orange and delicate touches of salted chocolate.

    Food and Wine Pairings

This vintage pairs wonderfully with Tuscan cuisine, such as a fine grilled beef dish, wild boar stew or cured meats. It also goes very well with roasted meats, mushroom risotto or structured vegetarian dishes.

    Serving and Aging

To fully enjoy this Chianti Classico Riserva 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, after a light decanting of thirty minutes to an hour. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve favourably until around 2032.

Castello di Volpaia: The Elegance of High-Altitude Terroir in Tuscany

    The Estate

Founded in 1966 by Raffaello Stianti, Castello di Volpaia is an iconic estate located in the heart of Tuscany. Now run by Giovannella, Federica and Nicolò Mascheroni-Stianti, the property spans nearly 390 hectares. A pioneer of organic viticulture, this estate stands out for its unique concept of a wine village, where the ageing cellars are housed within the churches and historic buildings of a medieval hamlet. Castello di Volpaia is renowned worldwide for wines that combine freshness, minerality and elegance.

    The Vineyard

The vines destined for this Chianti Classico are perched between 469 and 579 metres above sea level on the hillsides of Radda in Chianti. Facing southwest and southeast, this terroir rests on sandstone soils rich in stones, known as macigno Toscano. Farmed organically with Guyot pruning, the vineyard benefits from a planting density that favours optimal grape concentration while preserving the surrounding biodiversity.

    The Vintage

The 2022 vintage fully benefits from the estate's high altitude, allowing the grapes to retain great freshness and enjoy a slow, balanced ripening — key assets for preserving the fruit's elegance in the face of climatic challenges.

    Winemaking and Aging

Crafted using indigenous yeasts, the Chianti Classico Riserva 2022 undergoes a carefully managed skin maceration. The wine is then aged for approximately 24 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels and large casks, refining the tannic structure while preserving the brightness of the fruit.

    Grape Variety

    100% Sangiovese.
