Coming from Verzy and Chouilly, the 2018 Champagne Vintage Brut has 80% Pinot Noir from Verzy and is the last vintage to include Chardonnay from Chouilly. Historically, the Chardonnay was included in the blend to soften the austerity of the Pinot Noir; however, with these recent vintages and warming conditions, this is no longer necessary, as the Pinot Noir is fully ripe and appealing on its own. In the glass, it offers aromas of pure red cherries, fresh flowers, bright spice, and wild raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it has compact definition, a pillowy mousse, a chalky texture, and mouthwatering tangerine notes on the finish. While I am eagerly anticipating the 2019 release, this holds a fantastic place in the range to enjoy now or over the next 15 or so years.

    Description

Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for Louis Roederer Vintage 2018

    Tasting

    Appearance

The wine displays a golden-yellow hue, enlivened by a vibrant effervescence and a persistent stream of bubbles.

    Nose

The bouquet reveals the full depth of Verzy Pinot Noir. It opens with slightly tangy red-fruit notes reminiscent of redcurrant, alongside citrus zest evoking blood orange. Hints of fresh forest floor and almost briny, iodine-like accents complete this aromatic palette. With aeration, deeper, more mineral nuances gradually emerge, with suggestions of smoke, flint and stone.

    Palate

The attack is juicy and caressing, with a finely chiseled texture shaped by a zesty freshness reminiscent of orange. The crisp, rounded structure gives way to a grainy, slightly tannic texture that brings a delicious softness. The finish picks up with tangy, saline freshness, a hallmark signature of Verzy’s north-facing slopes.

    Food and Wine Pairings

This champagne is an ideal match for delicate fish and white meats. It also elevates celebratory moments.

A champagne revealing the nobility of the "La Montagne" terroir

    The estate

Founded in 1776 in Reims, the House of Champagne Louis Roederer has remained family-owned and independent. After more than 200 years in existence, the Louis Roederer House is still in the hands of the same family. Now led by Frédéric Rouzaud, who embodies the seventh generation of the lineage, the Louis Roederer House represents the excellence of Champagne wines around the world through cuvées crafted like works of art.

    The vineyard

This champagne comes from the “la Montagne” vineyard, located on the prestigious crus of Verzy and Chouilly. These 240 hectares, classified as Premier and Grand Cru, benefit from a privileged exposure on Verzy’s north-facing slopes, giving the cuvées that so distinctive saline freshness.

    The vintage

The harvest for the 2018 vintage in Champagne took place from August 27 to September 8. This vintage marks a decisive milestone in the House’s history, revealing the nobility of Verzy Pinot Noirs in a context of evolving viticultural practices and climate change.

    Winemaking and aging

Vintage 2018 was vinified with 28% of the wines aged in oak. Partial malolactic fermentation was carried out at 20%, preserving the champagne’s freshness and tension while bringing complexity and roundness. The dosage is 7 g/l.
