A vintage Blanc de Blancs champagne of great refinement and balance
The estate
Established in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ for nearly five centuries, the House of Champagne Philipponnat is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, which has retained its family spirit. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious walled vineyards in the Champagne region. This jewel gives rise to rare champagnes of exceptional power.
The vineyard
Philipponnat tends an exceptional vineyard in Champagne, comprising 20 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru vines in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.
The wine
Philipponnat's Grand Blanc 2016 is a Blanc de Blancs champagne crafted from vineyards on the Côte des Blancs. The first pressing comes exclusively from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards.
The vintage
After a mild start to the year despite frosts in January, cold weather set in during mid-April, disrupting the vines in full growth. Between 18 April and 2 May 2016, Champagne suffered several devastating frosts, the most severe on 27 April. Flowering began in mid-June, with full bloom on 24 and 25 June for the different grape varieties. The first half of the year was marked by a lack of sunshine and abundant rainfall. In August, fine weather encouraged optimal ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and ageing
This cuvée is vinified traditionally, in tanks and in oak, to prevent premature oxidation. Only the juice vinified in tanks undergoes partial malolactic fermentation. Aged for between 7 and 9 years. This Extra Brut champagne benefits from five to seven years of ageing, with a dosage of 4.25 g/litre.
Blend
This 2016 vintage champagne from Philipponnat is made from 100% Chardonnay.
