Description
An aromatic and balanced Pessac-Léognan red wine
The estate
Château Carbonnieux was founded in the 13th century by the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix Abbey. Château Carbonnieux is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is one of the oldest châteaux in Bordeaux. In 1956, Marc Perrin acquired the château, which became a cru classé in 1959 in both red and white.
The vineyard
Château Carbonnieux 2022 is a Pessac-Léognan wine produced from vineyards spread over a mosaic of terroirs ranging from clay-limestone to Günzian gravel. 55 hectares are given over to red grape varieties. The vines are 26 years old on average. The entire vineyard has been awarded level 3 High Environmental Value certification. Since 2021, 25% of the vineyard has been farmed organically.
The vintage
A relatively early budburst around 20 March preceded morning frosts which, thanks to late pruning and the rigour of the teams, had little impact on the vineyard. Flowering was uniform. A rainy June gave way to a particularly hot summer, resulting in a concentration of young vines. Despite the low yields, the quality was exceptional.
Winemaking and ageing
Hand-picked, the grapes are sorted on the vine and before and after destemming. Fermentation lasts an average of 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aged for 15 to 18 months in Bordeaux barrels, 40% of which are new.
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%).
