    Description

Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for Château Couhins 2015

    Tasting

    Color

The wine displays a very deep garnet hue, almost black, reflecting successful phenolic extraction and excellent concentration.

    Nose

The bouquet reveals fine aromatic complexity, with aromas of ripe fruit including blackcurrant, sour cherry, raspberry, and black cherry. Toasted notes from oak aging accompany these fruity aromas. With aeration, the nose gradually unveils hints of cedar and graphite, along with spicy and herbal touches, creating a multidimensional, evolving whole.

    Palate

On the palate, this wine stands out for its remarkable balance between power and elegance. The attack is full and fleshy, supported by fine, well-integrated tannins that lend notable suppleness. The finish is impressive, unfolding the aromas gradually and offering a flavorful conclusion with lightly toasted vanilla notes.

    Food and Wine Pairing

Château Couhins 2015 pairs perfectly with grilled or roasted red meats such as a beef steak with herbes de Provence or a côte de bœuf. It also elegantly complements roasted poultry such as guinea fowl or free-range chicken. Truffled preparations make for sophisticated gourmet pairings, as do hard, aged cheeses such as mature Comté.

    Serving and Cellaring

Château Couhins 2015 should be served at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C. Decanting for around one hour allows the wine to soften and open up its bouquet. This wine is best enjoyed between around 2021 and 2026, and has cellaring potential extending from ten to fifteen years after the vintage.

    An Elegant, Structured Red Pessac-Léognan

    The Estate

Born in the 18th century from the merger of the Gravette and Pont de Langon estates, Château Couhins is located in Villenave d'Ornon, on the doorstep of Bordeaux, in the Pessac-Léognan AOC. Classified as a grand cru classé de Graves in 1959, it has been owned by INRAE since 1968, which has made it an experimental estate combining production and winegrowing research. Its identity is rooted in elevated gravel ridges, with pebbles over a clay subsoil, promoting drainage and deep rooting.

    The Vineyard

The Château Couhins vineyard covers around 32 hectares on the doorstep of Bordeaux, twenty-two of which are dedicated to red varieties. The estate sits on the gravel ridges characteristic of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, made up of pebbles and rounded gravel overlying layers of compact clay with sandy-clay areas. This distinctive geological composition gives the wines their characteristic freshness, distinctive minerality, and remarkable aging potential.

    The Vintage

The 2015 vintage stood out for exceptional weather conditions, ranking as the third-hottest year since 1900. The year saw marked drought, monthly temperatures above seasonal norms, and exceptionally high sunshine levels during the first half of the year. Welcome nighttime coolness in August accompanied veraison, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while maintaining their balance.

    Winemaking and Aging

Château Couhins 2015 benefits from parcel-by-parcel vinification using precision viticulture techniques developed by INRAE. Aging is carried out in barrels, allowing the wine to develop aromatic complexity while preserving the finesse of its tannins. The estate’s distinctive scientific approach ensures controlled extraction and an optimal balance between fruit-driven power and tannic structure.

    Grape Varieties

Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Petit Verdot (5%), Cabernet Franc (5%).
