Château Fonréaud 1996

Some decent berry and grape character here, but it's somewhat lean and hard, with firm tannins and a hollow midpalate. Best after 1999.

Medium ruby-purple. Toasty bouquet, mineral undertone, coffee, prunes. On the palate, very juicy, elegant, soft, rounded tannins, an almost Burgundian character, pleasant finish, very well balanced, may gain another point during its drinking window.

97: Barrel sample (16/20): open, berry-scented bouquet, the fruit feels primary. Juicy, elegant palate, good balance, a hint of cherries, very clean. Once again a great Fonréaud with plenty of charm. 00: Medium ruby-purple. Toasty bouquet, mineral undertone, coffee, prunes. On the palate very juicy and elegant, soft, rounded tannins, almost Burgundian character, pleasant finish, very well balanced, can gain another point during its drinking window. 16/20 2001–2009
