Description
A great Saint-Julien wine combining power and elegance
The estate
Founded in 1725 by Abbot Joseph-Stanislas Gruaud, Château Gruaud Larose is a true icon of Bordeaux. Located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, this Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855 extends over a remarkable 82-hectare vineyard in a single block. Today, the estate is run by Jean Merlaut, from the family that has owned it since 1997. The estate stands out for its strong commitment to biodiversity and agroecology. Faithful to its historic motto, this internationally renowned property continues to produce "The Wine of Kings, the King of Wines", combining prestige with respect for the terroir.
The vineyard
The vines flourish on an exceptional terroir of Quaternary Garonne gravel, resting on a clay-limestone subsoil. This soil has a higher proportion of clay than the rest of the Saint-Julien appellation. With an average age of 46 to 49 years, the vines are planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Fully certified organic and farmed biodynamically, the estate favours natural methods such as the use of plant infusions and prophylaxis. Finally, to protect the harvest, an innovative anti-hail cannon operating by shock waves has been installed on site.
The wine
2025 marks the estate's 300th anniversary. To celebrate, the bottles (standard bottles, magnums, double magnums, jeroboams and imperials) will be screen-printed with a gilded wax seal.
The vintage
The 2025 vintage stands out for its remarkable precocity, offering one of the earliest harvests observed since 1989, kicking off in early September. The growing cycle was particularly marked by a heatwave in mid-August, causing water stress for the vines. These weather conditions naturally limited yields, which came in below 30 hectolitres per hectare. Despite this moderate quantity, this vintage promises exceptional quality, worthy of the region's greatest years. Alcohol content: 13.67% vol.
Grape varieties
The grape blend at Château Gruaud Larose is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety that brings power and structure. It is complemented by Merlot for its notes of ripe fruit, Cabernet Franc offering finesse and balance, and Petit Verdot.
