The richness and freshness of a Bordeaux red wine crafted by Pierre Lurton
The estate
Built in 1782, Château Marjosse is an estate located in Entre-deux-Mers, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Originally owned by wine merchant Bernard Chénier, Château Marjosse was acquired by the Deleuze family, who in 1990 leased a few plots to Pierre Lurton. In 1992, Pierre Lurton, who grew up at the neighbouring Château Reynier just next to this magnificent Chartreuse, moved into a second home at Château Marjosse and, over the years, gradually purchased several parts of the Deleuze family's property. In 2000, Pierre Lurton had an ultra-modern cellar built, containing more than 40 concrete vats, and in 2013 became the owner of the entire vineyard as well as the Chartreuse.
The vineyard
Château Marjosse red is a Bordeaux wine produced from a dedicated 35-hectare vineyard. The vines, ranging from 26 to 75 years old for the oldest, grow on exceptional clay-limestone soils.
The vintage
Spring frost was followed by heavy rainfall in May and June. The cool summer slowed down ripening and delayed the harvest by 17 days compared to 2020, giving this vintage a style reminiscent of those of the 1990s. This vintage ideally expresses the characteristics of each of the grape varieties that make up its blend. The liveliness and floral texture of the Merlots grown on clay-limestone terroirs are combined with beautifully ripe Cabernet Francs and Cabernet Sauvignons.
Vinification and ageing
In 2017, Pierre Lurton appointed Jean-Marc Domme as technical director. For the first time in the estate's history, Pierre Lurton introduced plot-by-plot vinification and the creation of micro-cuvées in limited quantities, made from grapes from the most remarkable plots, in order to express the characteristics and microclimate of each one. Harvested early in the morning and sorted, the grapes undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration (4 to 5 days). Carried out plot by plot, the vinification is performed without sulphur in order to reveal the aromatic purity of the wine. Following alcoholic fermentation, a selection of the best lots undergoes malolactic fermentation in 400-litre barrels (without any new wood), while the rest is aged on fine lees in temperature-controlled concrete vats.
