Decanter

Lovely fruity expression on the nose, dark fruits but bright and incredibly perfumed - violet and peonie. Lively and forward, this has a lovely soft density on the palate - not thick but not thin either, leans into the vintage but still has some tangy fruit and sweetness. Grippy but I love the energy here - really flows from start to finish with blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Tannins are fine and this feels well worked and presented. Characterful and although not a blockbuster this is very charming. No chaptalisation. 3.5pH. Still organic, certified since 2021. A yield of 26hl/ha. 10% press. Ageing in foudre casks for about two years. Harvest strategy; hand harvesting. 5-20% of fruit dropped due to botrytis.

First year in new cellar with cement tanks, no new oak barrels for ageing, Anne-Laurence Chardronnier winemaker and owner.

A pure, vibrant Merlot from Francs Côtes de Bordeaux

The estate
Château Marsau, nestled in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, east of Saint-Émilion, was acquired in 2017 by Anne-Laurence and Mathieu Chadronnier.

The vineyard
Located in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, the Château Marsau vineyard covers 12 hectares of clay-limestone slopes. This distinctive geology, combined with the favourable exposure of the plots, offers ideal conditions for Merlot to flourish. Certified organic farming allows this unique terroir in eastern Bordeaux to express itself authentically.

The vintage
The very wet spring called for a constant battle against mildew. The dry, sunny summer then allowed the most resilient bunches to develop optimally. In September, rain and botrytis led to losses, but rigorous sorting preserved the very best of the crop.

Vinification and ageing
Rigorous, meticulous sorting precedes vinification in a new cellar equipped with small concrete vats, allowing precise plot-by-plot work. The wine is aged 100% in foudres, preserving the purity of the fruit and the authentic expression of the terroir without masking Merlot's intrinsic qualities with overly pronounced oak.
