Château Picque Caillou 2016

Granular and rich in extract, yet without excess, it has gained in harmony: a pleasing development.

Nicely polished up front, with a beam of cassis and red licorice notes framed by light anise and sweet tobacco elements. A flash of apple wood adds range and texture on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2024. 6,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

Vibrant aromas of cassis, kirsch, wood shavings and savoury spices. Elegant on the palate, with vibrant mouthwatering acidity supporting its concentrated, luscious fruit character. Long, complex finish.

Sweet-tobacco aromas with some red fruit and cherries. Medium body, round and velvety tannins, and a delicious, ripe-fruit finish. In balance. Drink after 2022.

Blackish crimson. Not quite fully ripe notes on the nose. Correct but very tight and unexpansive. A bit of a low-key expression of the glory of the vintage. Drying finish. (JR)

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, discreet brightening on the rim. Ripe plum fruit, floral notes and fresh orange zest. Juicy, fine fruit sweetness, integrated tannins with a chocolate touch on the finish and plenty of length. Certain ageing potential.

The outstanding 2016 Château Picque Caillou reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as a classy, medium-bodied, elegant style. Notes of cassis, spring flowers, and graphite, with a touch of minerality, all define the bouquet, and it’s already drinking nicely. Enjoy bottles over the coming decade or so.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, production of 96,000 bottles. Dense purple with a garnet rim. Fragrant wild-berry bouquet, with hints of violets, cassis and dark Brazil tobacco. Mid-palate shows a structured body with reserves, good length, finesse and drinkability. Finish of black pepper and plum skin. Can still gain further! Back to classic style!

Kunz Fassprobe 17: (60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot) Silky, full and powerful bouquet with blueberries, cassis, tobacco and a delicate hint of mocha. Balanced, silky and dense palate with vibrant fruit, plenty of fine tannins, complex aromatics, elegant structure and a long, aromatic finish.

On the palate, the wine faithfully mirrors the aromas; it is fresh, fruity, and slightly creamy. It has well-integrated tannins and a refreshing structure that supports the fruit on the finish. A delicious wine!

Dark, vibrant color of medium intensity. Discreet nose with ripe fruit. Pleasant palate, flavorful and perfumed, with good length. Overall expression somewhat reserved.

This beautifully balanced wine is rich and stylish. Classic black-currant flavors enhanced by judicious wood aging have a smoky edge as well as fresh fruitiness and the potential for richness as the wine develops. Drink this wine from 2023.
