Château Tour de Pez 2020

Lively and playful, the cherry and strawberry fruit is almost tart with a soft sour edge that is highlighted even more by the high acidity, though there is also a gentle creaminess and stoniness that comes in on the mid-palate. Feels a touch disjointed right now, lightly framed, not much weight and overall a bit sharp. Give this time.

The 2020 Tour de Pez has a high-toned, showy nose with ample, almost lascivious red fruit that feels just a little smudged. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black and red fruit, a fine backbone, fresh and focused, and a grippy, lightly spiced finish. Give it 2–3 years in bottle.

Medium-bodied, ripe, dark, fresh, creamy, with red and black currants, cedar, and tobacco leaves on both the nose and palate. Forward and easy to like in its youth, you can enjoy this with ease upon release. Drink from 2023–2036.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, deep core, faint ochre brightening on the rim. Delicate spice underlying sweet black cherry fruit, a touch of plum, smoky, some cedar and graphite. Juicy, ripe cherries, integrated tannins, freshly structured, salty-mineral finish, lemony aftertaste, a lively wine at the table.

Spicy red and black fruits, tobacco, and leathery nuances all emerge from the 2020 Château Tour De Pez, a forward, medium-bodied, mid-weight effort that already offers pleasure yet should evolve for 10–12 years. I obviously overrated this from barrel in 2021, but it’s still pretty darn good.

A highly floral nose with aromas of small berries—crushed raspberry, blackcurrant, and blackberry—and a very light toasty note. The palate is vibrant, with delicate, bright fruit, while the rounded tannins highlight elegant hints of lightly vanilla-tinged dark fruits.

La Tour de Pez is on the starting blocks, ready to race. Youthful, it showcases its terroir with nuances of graphite and cedar. Lush and nicely dense, the wine offers velvety, powerful tannins. These go hand in hand with the acidity, which ensures freshness and an expressive aromatic finish. A promising wine that needs a bit of time. Moreover, it has excellent ageing potential.
