    Decanter

Structured and substantial; there is a black plum and mulberry fruit, accented with notes of smoke, fresh saddle leather, earth and game. The texture is super-concentrated, with firm, grippy tannins, massive extract, and more than enough freshness to carry this to a superbly long finish. The grapes are from a parcel of 1.64ha on the Morey side of the appellation; the oldest vines were planted just after the Second World War, the youngest being 40 years old. This is top-flight wine.

Very intense nose. Juicy-fruited, so that one hardly notices the structure that is undoubtedly there. Very pure and fresh. Just really rather glorious. Long and sweet but not heavy. Yes! So long. (JR)

    Le Figaro Vin

On the nose, a blackberry tart fresh out of the oven, just like at Grandma’s: delicate shortcrust pastry, subtle sweet spices in the background, restrained sweetness. A touch of fine cocoa rounds it all off. On the palate, it’s a real Pandora’s box, packed with salty and sweet treats, highly addictive, with that slightly numbing sensation of Sichuan pepper.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Bruno Clair

    Tasting Notes

    Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, intense red hue, enhanced by delicate violet nuances.

    Nose
Remarkably complex, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of well-ripened black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, intertwined with hints of red berries and citrus zest. With aeration, it reveals subtle floral fragrances of violet, exotic spices, as well as deeper aromas of damp earth, cocoa and noble wood.

    Palate
Full-bodied and rich, the palate charms with its silky texture and imposing structure. The tannins, both fine and present, are perfectly balanced by lively acidity and a refreshing fruity core. The remarkably long finish stands out with a lovely saline, mineral tension, punctuated by light chocolate notes.

    Serving and Cellaring

With immense ageing potential, this 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru can be cellared and enjoyed between approximately 2033 and 2053.

The Intensity and Elegance of a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits

    The Estate

Founded in 1979, Domaine Bruno Clair is the heir to a historic winemaking heritage in Burgundy. Located in Marsannay-la-Côte, the estate today spans 27 hectares across eight villages and thirty-two prestigious appellations. Currently led by Bruno Clair, supported by his children Édouard, Arthur and Margaux, the estate stands out for its approach combining tradition and modernity. Renowned for its agronomic rigour and precise winemaking, Domaine Bruno Clair produces wines of rare elegance, faithfully reflecting the richness and diversity of Burgundy's finest terroirs.

    The Vineyard

The Bonnes-Mares plot farmed by the estate covers just over one and a half hectares. It has the unique distinction of being located entirely within the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, bordering the Clos de Tart. Facing south-east and reaching an altitude of 280 metres, the old vines, planted between 1946 and 1980, thrive on white marl soils with clay-limestone composition, resting on a subsoil of crinoidal limestone. The vineyard is farmed according to sustainable viticulture principles, with exclusively hand-harvested grapes.

    Winemaking and Ageing

The making of the 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru begins with a rigorous sorting of the berries and partial destemming, retaining a proportion of whole clusters. Fermentation, initiated by indigenous yeasts, takes place in open wooden or granite vats over about fifteen days, accompanied by regular punching down of the cap. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel, followed by ageing of eighteen to twenty-four months in oak barrels, including a carefully measured proportion of new wood.
