Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue
Tasting
Colour
This red wine displays a beautifully clear colour, typical of Pinot Noirs from its appellation.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its great precision. It reveals aromas of black and red fruits such as blackberry, raspberry and cherry. Floral notes of rose petals and iris intertwine with hints of orange zest, incense and forest floor, alongside a minerality reminiscent of crushed stone.
Palate
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, at once fresh and layered. It is built around a rich core of fruit, supported by exceptionally fine tannins. The whole is taut and linear, stretching into a long, fragrant and complex finish.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with delicately textured meats such as roast pigeon, veal fillet with mushrooms or fine poultry. It also goes very well with an ancient-grain and vegetable risotto, as well as hard cooked cheeses such as aged Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and ageing
This Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 is built for very long ageing and can be cellared for drinking until around 2053.
A Burgundy Grand Cru of remarkable finesse
The estate
Although the family's winegrowing roots date back to 1450, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue only took on its true modern form after the Second World War. Located in Burgundy, the estate covers around 12.5 hectares. Today, it is run by the founder's granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette. They are supported by a stable technical team, ensuring the continuity of the house style, renowned for its respectful approach to terroir, and the estate is the largest landowner in its flagship appellation.
The vineyard
The estate owns around 7.2 hectares of the Musigny Grand Cru, representing nearly two thirds of the appellation, including the monopole of the Petits Musignys sub-section. The vines, located mid-slope at an altitude of between 260 and 300 metres, grow on red clay and limestone soils. The vineyard is managed using integrated pest management, combining organic methods with mating disruption. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand.
The vintage
With contemporary climatic conditions favouring rapid ripening, the 2023 vintage was marked by the decision to harvest early. This choice in the growing cycle made it possible to pick grapes at full phenolic ripeness while preserving a lovely natural freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
For the Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023, the harvest is 100% destemmed. After a cold maceration, fermentation is initiated by indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, with temperatures kept below 32°C. The wine is then aged in barrels, with a proportion of new oak ranging from 35 to 45%.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir (100%). This cuvée is made exclusively from vines over 25 years old, with an average vine age often exceeding 40 years.
