Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for Domaine Coursodon’s L'Olivaie 2022

    Tasting

    Appearance
The wine displays a beautifully intense garnet hue, enhanced by violet highlights.

    Nose
The bouquet is concentrated and intense, revealing aromas of red and black fruits such as blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry. Spicy notes of black pepper and licorice accompany hints of cocoa, leather and floral incense.

    Palate
On the palate, this wine delivers length and power with tight, silky tannins. The Syrah unfolds its generosity while retaining remarkable finesse and a subtle texture. The overall impression is one of richness and elegance.

    Food and Wine Pairings

This Saint-Joseph pairs perfectly with game meats served with candied fruits and ventrèche vegetables, or more generally with full-flavored dishes that highlight its structure and aromatic complexity.

    Serving and Cellaring

It is recommended to serve L'Olivaie 2022 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be cellared for more than 10 years and is best enjoyed between around 2026 and 2036.

A Characterful Saint-Joseph from an Exceptional Granite Terroir

    The estate

The Domaine Coursodon, established in the late 19th century by Antonin and Jean-Auguste Coursodon in the Rhône Valley, is a historic benchmark of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Located in Mauves, the birthplace of this appellation, the estate has carried on a family expertise for five generations. Now run by Jérôme Coursodon, it has developed a plot-by-plot approach that showcases the diversity of granite terroirs through emblematic cuvées such as L'Olivaie, Silice, Le Paradis Saint Pierre and La Sensonne.

    The vineyard

The lieu-dit “L'Olivaie” from which this Saint-Joseph is produced is defined by a highly granitic terroir with shallow soils. The sixty-year-old vines are planted on steep south-facing slopes. Vineyard work is carried out entirely by hand, with no mechanization possible, and treatments applied using a backpack sprayer. The vines are trained on stakes discontinuously. Yields are controlled at 30 hl/ha.

    Vinification and aging

Harvesting is done by hand and the grapes are transported in 40 kg crates. On arrival, the bunches are sorted on a table and then 80% destemmed. Maceration and fermentation take place in open vats for 25 days with two punch-downs per day. L'Olivaie 2022 is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 15% of which are new oak.

    Grape variety

This Rhône Valley wine is 100% Syrah.
