Vinum

Interesting, complex, smoky-floral aromatics; crystal-clear attack, racy development; juiciness, density, minerality, great tension and length, transparent and crystalline; top class.

This has a bit of flamboyance, with orange curd and elderflower notes rippling along the edges of a bright yellow apple and honeysuckle core. Shows a salted butter accent on the finish. A delightfully expressive white. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2031. 2,000 cases made.

Fans of white Bordeaux wine need to be all over this gem. One sniff, and sip, and you are hooked. I do not know where to start. Complete in every way, the wine kicks off with a nose that explodes with its orange rind, honeysuckle, lemon puree, flowers, green apples, spice, and herbs. As striking as that was, it is the incredible purity in the endless waves of citrus, and yellow tropical fruits that seal the deal. From there, the only thing left is the electric, seamless finish that once it gets started, it doesn't want to quit. This gem competes with many of the worlds great wines, and it sells for a fraction of what they sell for. The wine blends 75% Sauvignon Blanc, and 25% Semillon. This is the best white wine ever produced by the Bernard family at Domaine de Chevalier. Don't miss it! Drink from 2024-2050.

Medium yellow, green hints, silver reflections. On the nose, subtle notes of grapefruit, yellow tropical fruit, a mineral touch, hints of lime and background nuances of lychee. Lean on the palate with white pome fruit, a well-integrated acidic structure, mineral notes and medium length. Offers great drinking pleasure.

Mostly Sauvignon Blanc (there's 30% Semillon), the 2021 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc offers beautiful tart citrus, honeyed minerality, and sappy, floral notes in a fresh, focused, racy style that still brings beautiful depth and richness. It's more tight and reserved than the L'Esprit and needs 2-4 years in the cellar. It's another classy, vibrant, age-worthy beauty from this brilliant estate.

The white Domaine de Chevalier 2021 has a fine, super-fresh nose, is very concentrated, with just a hint of acacia honey on the top note. Very clear and broadly unfurled on the palate, this is a great Domaine de Chevalier with tremendous citrus notes and a massive, mineral texture on the tongue. Driven and powerful, extremely dense and saline, it will open up soon, but is likely to age for a long time.

You can relax with Domaine de Chevalier in difficult vintages, and it is one of the few successes across both colours in 2021. The aromatics are a little closed, but the flavour and texture on the palate are immediately gripping. Slate, wet stones, controlled delivery of citrus, cold ash, gunsmoke, white peach, apple. It stretches out across the palate and is one of the wines of the vintage. Owner Olivier Bernard.

A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, the 2021 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc sails from the glass, after a swirl or two, with a gorgeous perfume of spiced apples, grapefruit oil, and orange blossoms, leading to wafts of sea spray and paraffin wax. The medium-bodied palate has a gorgeous satiny texture juxtaposing the racy backbone and supporting the apple and citrus layers, finishing long and perfumed.

    Le Figaro Vin

A superb nose that asserts itself with great finesse. Delicate and elegant, it reveals notes of honey and small white flowers. On the palate, it is full and round, with beautiful tension, showing notes of blossom honey, pear, and almond, with perfectly ripe fruit. Smoky and mineral nuances emerge on the finish. A very fine vintage for Chevalier Blanc.

Depth and subtlety are announced from the very first wafts of the bouquet, with notes of mirabelle plum, peach and verbena. The oak is certainly noticeable, but it serves above all as a supportive element, not a dominant one. Dense and saline, the wine is sapid and persistent. It owes this latter trait to a fine bitterness that lengthens the finish and, together with the acidity, ensures its ageing potential. An elegant, harmonious wine.

Pale color. Intense, refined nose, fruity and floral. Delicate on the attack, with plenty of flavor from mid-palate through the finish, the wine builds and concludes broad, ripe, deep, without any biting acidity. It’s very good. Blend: 75% sauvignon, 25% sémillon. Alcohol: 13.5%. Yield: 40 hl/ha. Estate converting to organic.

96–98. Barrel Sample. This is a serious white wine. Its structure and its spicy fruit tones lend depth. The style is ageworthy with ripe white fruits that are touched by apricots.

    Description

The freshness and aromatic purity of a fine white wine from Pessac-Léognan

    The estate

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the magnificent Domaine de Chevalier is one of the greatest Classified Growths of Bordeaux. This iconic estate of the Pessac-Léognan appellation is located in a verdant setting south of Bordeaux.

    The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier reigns over a rare vineyard that comprises 7 hectares of white vines, currently converting to organic farming practices. A true mosaic of terroirs, the Domaine de Chevalier vineyard is planted on soils of black sand and fine white gravel, resting on a well drained gravelly-clayey subsoil and gives rise to fine Pessac-Léognan wines.

    The vintage

Marked by 7 episodes of frost between April 3rd and May 3rd, which had an impact on the vineyard, 2021 was also marked by heavy rainfall from May to June, leading to a significant mildew pressure in July, particularly on the Merlot grapes. The very mild conditions in September and October were ideal for refining the ripening process until the harvest. The grapes harvested showcased a high quality, notably regarding their powerful expression, aromatic intensity and their freshness.

    Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with 3 to 5 sortings in order to keep only the finest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes. The grapes are then slowly pressed for 3 hours. The settling and alcoholic fermentation are carried out in barrels. Lastly, the wine is aged for 18 months in barrels (35% new) with stirring of the lees.

    The blend

    Sauvignon Blanc (75%)

    Sémillon (25%).

Domaine de Chevalier 2021 white wine: Characteristics and tasting tips

    The tasting

    Colour

Bright, pale gold colour with almond green highlights.

    Nose

Pure and fresh, the nose offers an alluringly lively, refined and complex expression. Racy and seductive, the bouquet blends fruity (vine peach) and floral (hawthorn, lime blossom, acacia flower) fragrances with notes of citrus zest and also a saline (quartz, gunflint) expression, a typical feature of gravelly soils.

    Palate

Elegant and balanced, the palate harmoniously blends density and delicacy with a silky feel. Freshness and a beautiful aromatic purity lead to a refined and persistent finish.
