The 2023 Lirac La Reine des Bois is showing beautifully today. A blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre in undisclosed proportions, it opens with a perfumed bouquet of lavender, lilac, rose petals and spring flowers, mingled with delicate spice tones that reflect its ripe maturity. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it’s more structured than La Dame Rousse, with velvety but assertive tannins and a fleshy core of fruit. The finish is long and penetrating, marked by notes of garrigue, dried herbs and a saline touch. Matured in used barrels that previously held white wine, it’s a serious, characterful Lirac built for aging.

    Decanter

The nose shows blackberry notes, very ripe and juicy, as if fresh from the bush. There’s a good amount of chewy, ripe tannin, balanced acidity, and a touch of graphite to the texture on the finish. Everything is in its place here to produce an excellent Lirac.

40% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Syrah. Certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter). Aged 85% in stainless-steel tank, 15% in barriques. Tank/cask sample. Tasted blind. Appealing and inviting nose with a slight smoke-and-gravel note. Attractive and rich with liquorice and spice – fine tannins and a layered, dense finish. Already drinking well yet will age gracefully. (AC)

    Description

Aromatic expression and structure of a Red wine from Lirac

    The estate

Created in 1986 by Francis Delorme and his son Christophe, Domaine de la Mordorée extends over 42 hectares in the Southern Rhône Valley, spread across eight communes. Based in Tavel, the estate produces wines under several prestigious appellations including Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac and Condrieu. Since Christophe’s passing, Madeleine Delorme and her daughter Ambre have been running the property, perpetuating organic viticulture. The estate is distinguished by its cuvées with poetic names, notably "La Reine des Bois", and its respectful approach to the terroir, which has earned it international recognition.

    The vineyard

The vines dedicated to the production of this Red wine from Lirac are cultivated according to the principles of certified organic farming. Harvesting is done entirely by hand with meticulous sorting. The terroir consists of clay-siliceous soils strewn with rolled pebbles, characteristic of the Lirac appellation.

    Vinification and aging

Vinification begins with destemming and crushing of the grapes. Fermentation takes place under temperature control. Aging is carried out in a combination of barrels and vats, allowing the freshness of the fruit to be preserved while providing a delicate structure.

    Blend

The Blend of this cuvée La Reine des Bois Lirac Rouge 2023 from Domaine de la Mordorée is composed of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre.
