Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Tasting
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, brilliant ruby red, shading subtly into elegant garnet hues.
Nose
Flamboyant and remarkably expressive, the nose opens on generous aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as blackberry, black cherry and raspberry. It then gains complexity with floral touches of violet, spicy and liquorice notes, harmoniously blended with hints of coffee, smoke and undergrowth.
Palate
Full-bodied and dense, the palate seduces with its generous texture and vibrant fruit, supported by firm yet exceptionally silky tannins. The perfectly balanced acidity brings a lovely tension that offsets the wine's richness. The exceptionally long finish lingers on spicy, toasted notes and a delicate saline minerality.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great red wine pairs beautifully with noble roasted poultry such as pigeon or duck, served with a reduced jus and mushrooms. It also enhances feathered game, delicate meats such as pink-roasted veal fillet, or refined vegetable dishes showcasing morels or truffle.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate the Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. While young, it benefits from being opened several hours in advance or lightly decanted. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve beautifully until around 2050.
The Expression of a Grand Cru from Burgundy by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
The Estate
Located in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of Burgundy, the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti took on its modern form when it was established in 1869 by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet. This roughly 28-hectare vineyard is renowned worldwide for its exceptional terroirs and its uncompromising philosophy, rejecting any form of short-term speculation. Co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy families since 1942, the estate is now co-managed by Perrine Fenal and Bertrand de Villaine. A true pioneer, the estate stands out for its respectful viticulture, showcasing the pure expression of its prestigious climats.
The Vineyard
The Echezeaux grand cru is located in the commune of Flagey-Échézeaux, on limestone and clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Nuits. The estate applies extremely rigorous viticultural standards there, with strict yield limitation and soil work carried out using horses to preserve its aerated structure. A pioneer in ecological practices, the vineyard has been farmed according to organic principles since 1985 and is managed biodynamically, with official certification obtained in the 2010s.
The Vintage
The year 2015 was marked by warm weather conditions, favouring optimal and complete ripening of the berries. The harvest took place late, between 12 and 14 September, making it possible to pick grapes that were healthy, rich and endowed with exceptional phenolic ripeness, while retaining a perfect balance.
Winemaking and Ageing
The estate's philosophy relies on minimal-intervention winemaking to let the terroir express itself fully. After an extremely strict sorting of the bunches at harvest, extraction is carried out with precision to preserve the finesse of the fruit. The Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 is then aged in high-quality oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood, for a sufficiently long period to allow the wine to blend harmoniously.
