Partially destemmed and matured in a mix of foudres (50%), used barrels (30%) and concrete tanks (20%), the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Domaine des Sénéchaux is a lovely effort, opening with aromas of dark wild berries, cherries, mulberries, flowers and garrigue. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it reveals a fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, fresh and ethereal finish. Harmonious and refined, this blend of 59% Grenache Noir, 23% Syrah and 18% Mourvèdre is a real success.

This red shows refinement, with beautiful harmony and integration to its rich cascade of dark fruit, streaked with sandalwood and a refreshing menthol edge. Delivers full-bodied lusciousness, yet its earth and mineral elements keep pace. Polished tannins hold the rails through the lovely finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2042. 4,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

Flowers and sweet cherries get the perfume going. The palate shows off its core of elegant, refined, kirsch and raspberries, topped with pepper and garrigue, with just a hint of spice that shows up at the back of the finish. The wine is produced by the Cazes family, better known as the owners of Château Lynch Bages in Pauillac. Drink from 2026-2037.

Based on 59% Grenache, 23% Syrah, and 18% Mourvèdre and aged in 50% foudre, 30% used barrique, and 20% concrete, the 2023 Châteauneuf du Pape offers an incredibly Provençal perfume of black cherries, mulberries, garrigue, and assorted floral nuances. It's medium-bodied and shows good mid-palate concentration, ripe tannins, and outstanding length on the finish. This impeccably made Châteauneuf du Pape has more mid-palate depth than most in the vintage. It comes from a mix of terroirs, and there are roughly 6,666 cases produced. Drink 2025-2040.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 from Domaine des Sénéchaux

    Tasting

    Colour

The colour is deep, ranging from ruby to purple, with dark highlights that reflect the presence of Syrah and Mourvèdre alongside Grenache Noir.

    Nose

The nose unveils an intense Provençal bouquet of black cherry, blackberry and ripe dark fruit, accompanied by floral and garrigue notes, lifted by a touch of spice and pepper.

    Palate

The palate, medium to full-bodied, appeals with its fleshy, rich texture, supported by ripe yet supple tannins. It extends into a long, fresh and aromatic finish, where red and black fruits linger along with garrigue.

    Food and Wine Pairings

This wine is an ideal companion to slow-cooked meats and dishes with rich sauces, such as roast leg of lamb with herbes de Provence or a beef daube. It also pairs very well with fine poultry in sauce, as well as with hard or semi-hard cheeses, such as a mature Comté or a tomme.

    Serving and Cellaring

We recommend serving this Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 at a temperature between 16 and 18 °C. Decanting for an hour or two before serving can help the aromas open up and the tannins soften, particularly in its early years.

An Elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape Shaped by the Expertise of Domaine des Sénéchaux

    The Estate

The Domaine des Sénéchaux is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Rhône Valley, with a vineyard dating back to the 14th century. It now extends over approximately 27 hectares. Owned since 2006 by the Cazes family, who also run Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, the estate has benefited from a partnership with the Pradon family since 2018. Its distinctiveness lies in the meeting of Rhône Valley savoir-faire and Bordeaux expertise, as well as in the particular attention paid to its old Grenache Noir vines.

    The Vineyard

The vineyard behind this Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies at the heart of the appellation's plateau, on diverse terroirs spread across several cultivation zones. The soils, made up of clay and rolled pebbles, promote excellent drainage while retaining heat. Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre occupy most of the vineyard area, particularly on the south- and southwest-facing slopes, where old Grenache vines bring depth and concentration.

    Vinification and Ageing

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 from Domaine des Sénéchaux is made from partially destemmed grapes. Ageing is divided between foudres, used barrels and concrete tanks, a balance that promotes the gradual integration of the tannins and the preservation of fruit, without marking the wine excessively with oak.

    Grape Varieties

This wine is made from a blend dominated by Grenache Noir, complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre.
