    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2024 Domaine du Château de Meursault

    Tasting

    Colour
With a deep, brilliant ruby red colour, this wine captivates at first glance.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of well-ripened black fruit, enhanced by spicy touches in which clove stands out in particular.

    Palate
Supple and wonderfully fluid, the palate offers a remarkably silky texture. The fruity expression is enriched with subtle nuances of liquorice, supported by beautifully fine tannins and lovely acidity. The finish proves long, elegant and perfectly balanced.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with rare-cooked red meats, such as a fine cut of beef or a sirloin steak, as well as with roasted pork or feathered game. Its earthy notes make an ideal match for mushroom-based dishes, while a characterful cheese such as Époisses will beautifully round off the meal.

    Service and Storage

To fully appreciate this Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2024, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of between 14 and 16°C, taking care to decant it thirty to sixty minutes before tasting. This wine, built for aging, will reveal its full complexity through to around 2040.

    Other Characteristics

This wine has been praised by critics, earning a score of 95 points from World of Fine Wine. It also comes from vines that have been certified organic since 2022.

The Power and Refinement of a Great Pommard Wine

    The Estate

Founded in the eleventh century, the Domaine du Château de Meursault is an iconic institution of Burgundy. Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of sixty-seven hectares spread across more than a hundred plots. Acquired in 2012 by the Halley family, the estate is now run by Olivier Halley, alongside Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. Firmly committed to environmental responsibility, the estate combines respect for age-old traditions with modernisation, having achieved organic certification for all of its land in 2022.

    The Vineyard

The Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" comes from a 3.6-hectare vineyard comprising five plots planted between 1948 and 1978. Ideally exposed to the southeast, these vines lie at the foot of the slope on a gentle incline. The warm, well-drained soils are made up of iron-rich reddish earth and gravel over ancient alluvial deposits, offering ideal conditions for grape ripening.

    The Vintage

2024 proved to be a particularly challenging year in terms of weather. A wet and unstable spring disrupted flowering, leading to coulure and shatter. Intense mildew pressure throughout the summer required constant attention. Despite modest yields, rigorous sorting made it possible to preserve grapes of remarkable quality.

    Winemaking and Aging

Following hand-picked harvesting and careful optical sorting after destemming, the winemaking of the Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2024 begins with a five-day cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation then continues over sixteen to twenty days, favouring gentle pump-overs to extract the finest tannins. The wine is finally aged for around fifteen months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new, with malolactic fermentation completing in early February.

    Grape Variety

    100% Pinot Noir.
