Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru "Champ Gain" 2023 from Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a bright pale yellow hue, adorned with subtle golden reflections.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is seductive and complex, blending scents of fresh citrus, such as lemon zest, with aromas of ripe exotic fruits. Delicate toasted notes, blanched almonds and garden herbs round out this vibrant olfactory palette.
Palate
The palate offers a smooth texture and beautiful richness, perfectly balanced by a taut mineral structure and vibrant acidity. The unctuousness of the fruit harmonises with a characteristic salinity, leading to a long, stony finish enhanced by nuances of white flowers and hazelnut.
Food and wine pairings
This white wine pairs wonderfully with seafood and shellfish, such as langoustines served with a light creamy sauce. It also elevates pan-seared salmon, delicate poultry, a suprême of turbot or a seafood risotto. When it comes to cheeses, it is an ideal companion to bloomy-rind varieties such as Chaource.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru "Champ Gain" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 11 and 13 degrees. This wine can be enjoyed in its youth but will continue to develop for optimal drinking until around 2033, with cellaring potential extending beyond fifteen years under good storage conditions.
The elegance and mineral purity of a great Burgundy terroir
The estate
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is a historic figure of Burgundy. Extending today over 127 hectares spread between the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise, this family estate is currently led by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, representing the seventh generation. Combining tradition and modernity, the estate stands out for an environmentally respectful approach to viticulture, with a conversion to organic farming planned for its bicentenary in 2025.
The vineyard
Acquired in 2014, the 1.05-hectare plot that gives rise to this Puligny-Montrachet benefits from a privileged high-altitude position on the hillside, just below the Les Folatières climat. Facing south-east, the vines thrive on limestone soils composed of light, free-draining stones. The singularity of this terroir also lies in the diversity of the age of its vines, planted between 1955 and 2018 and cultivated according to the principles of organic farming.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage is defined by nuanced and favourable climatic conditions. Following a cool spring that fostered steady growth, May and June proved particularly dry and sunny, providing ideal flowering conditions. Regular rainfall throughout the summer helped avoid prolonged water stress. The heatwaves at the end of August and the beginning of September ultimately ensured optimal ripening of the berries, requiring green harvesting to control the abundant yields.
Winemaking and aging
Following manual harvesting carried out at optimal ripeness, the vinification of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru "Champ Gain" 2023 is accompanied by careful aging in French oak barrels. The measured use of new wood, representing 20 to 25% of the barrels, allows delicate toasted notes to be subtly integrated while preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
