Description
The elegance and typicity of a vin jaune from Château-Chalon
The estate
Domaine Grand is a family-owned estate based in Passenans, in the Jura, with winemaking roots dating back to the 17th century. It took its current form in the 1970s and reached a new turning point in 2015, when Emmanuel Grand and Nathalie Morin, who now run the estate, chose to refocus the vineyard on around ten hectares. Converted to organic farming and certified in 2021, the estate has forged an identity around the oxidative expressions of Savagnin, most notably vin jaune, produced across several prestigious Jura appellations.
The vineyard
This vin jaune comes from Savagnin parcels in the Château-Chalon appellation, which is reserved exclusively for this style of wine. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils and grey marls typical of the Jura, a terroir that gives Savagnin the density and ageing potential required for long maturation under a veil of yeast. This appellation, one of the most renowned for vin jaune, ranks among the exceptional terroirs farmed by Domaine Grand around Passenans and the neighbouring villages.
Vinification and maturation
As the appellation requires, the Vin Jaune 2018 is made exclusively from Savagnin, vinified and then aged in oak barrels without topping up for at least six years and three months. During this time, a veil of yeast forms naturally on the surface of the wine, protecting it from direct oxidation while allowing it to develop its distinctive character. This gradual evaporation, known as the angels' share, concentrates the wine before it is bottled in the traditional 62 cl clavelin, the emblematic format of vin jaune.
Grape variety
This Vin Jaune 2018 from Domaine Grand is 100% Savagnin.
