Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey 1er Cru "Pièce 15" 2022
Tasting
Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its elegance, revealing notes of white flowers and citrus. These are interwoven with subtle touches of stone fruit such as peach and pear, enhanced by nuances of light honey and a minerality reminiscent of wet stone.
Palate
On the palate, this white wine offers a silky, enveloping texture, supported by a medium to full body. The tasting experience is marked by great mineral precision and a refreshing acidity. Over time, this cuvée will develop a buttery richness along with delicious aromas of hazelnut and toasted bread.
Food and Wine Pairing
Thanks to its minerality and freshness, this wine pairs beautifully with seafood, particularly shellfish such as crab or lobster served with citrus butter. It also enhances grilled or sauced fish, roasted poultry, white meats in cream sauce, delicately spiced Asian dishes, and hard cheeses such as an aged Comté or Gruyère.
Service and Storage
For optimal enjoyment, this wine should be served at a temperature between 11 and 13°C. It can be enjoyed now, but also has a fine structure that will allow it to age in the cellar until around 2032.
The Authentic Expression of a White Wine from the Mercurey Appellation
The Estate
Founded in the 1920s by Georges Lorenzon, an Italian immigrant, Domaine Lorenzon is located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, in Burgundy. Today, the estate is run by Bruno Lorenzon, the third generation, who took over in 1997. Under his guidance, the estate has grown to 9 hectares, mostly classified as Premier Cru. Renowned for his uncompromising standards, Bruno Lorenzon has farmed his vines organically for more than thirty years, establishing the estate as one of the region's benchmarks.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from a rigorous selection of fifteen small plots of old vines located within the Mercurey appellation. These terroirs rest on soils rich in limestone, made up of marl and red clay, giving the wine its mineral signature. The vineyard is distinguished by unusual viticultural practices: an extremely high planting density of up to 20,000 vines per hectare and very high trellising (1.70 metres) to optimise photosynthesis while protecting the bunches from the sun. The soils are worked mechanically, without any chemical weedkillers.
The Vintage
2022 is considered a classic, well-balanced vintage. After a mild winter spared from frost, flowering took place in late May. June brought beneficial rainfall, replenishing water reserves ahead of a particularly hot summer. The water stress of July and August helped slow vegetative ripening. Timely rainfall in mid-August, followed by two dry, windy weeks before the harvest, produced grapes of impeccable health.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes are hand-harvested in small six-kilo crates to preserve the berries. The whole clusters are gently pressed for around four hours with skin contact. Fermentation then takes place in used barrels over six to eight weeks. Ageing continues for a year in barrels (20 to 40% new oak), custom-made by the winemaker himself with a very light toast. Finally, the wine rests for six months in stainless steel tanks before bottling, which is carried out without fining or filtration in order to preserve its full authenticity.
