    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Camarcanda 2021 Gaja Ca' Marcanda

    Tasting notes

    Color
The wine displays a beautiful ruby red hue, illuminated by subtle garnet reflections.

    Nose
Generous and complex, the nose opens with aromas of black fruits and blueberry. It then reveals notes of Mediterranean aromatic herbs, myrtle and cinnamon, underscored by a mineral touch of graphite.

    Palate
The palate is dominated by vibrant fruit reminiscent of cherry, raspberry and blood orange. Supported by fine, silky tannins, it offers an elegant structure and beautiful volume. A delicate coffee bean bitterness precedes a persistent, delightfully saline finish.

    Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs perfectly with grilled or herb-roasted beef, game such as duck or wild boar, as well as braised poultry. It also goes wonderfully with pasta with ragù, risotto or aged hard cheeses such as parmesan or pecorino.

    Service and storage

To fully appreciate this 2021 vintage, light decanting before serving is recommended. With excellent aging potential, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until 2051.

The concentration and elegance of a red wine from Bolgheri

    The estate

Founded in 1996 by Angelo Gaja, the Gaja Ca' Marcanda estate stands among Italy's most important references. The estate is located within the Bolgheri appellation, on the magnificent Tuscan coast. Its name, meaning "the house of endless negotiations" in Piedmontese dialect, recalls the effort required to acquire it. Today, the estate is run by Angelo Gaja and his three children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, representing the fifth generation of the family. Featuring an innovative underground cellar, the estate spans 300 acres and stands out for its constant pursuit of quality, its respect for terroir and its deep commitment to biodiversity.

    The vineyard

Located in the Bolgheri region, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate influenced by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding mountains. The vines flourish on two distinct soil types: "terre brune," rich in clay and silt in the lower areas, and "terre bianche," made up of calcareous clay, sand and stones on the higher ground. The estate has applied sustainable methods since 1995, promoting biodiversity through the absence of chemical pesticides, the production of natural compost enriched by earthworms, and the presence of beehives.

    The vintage

The year began with a harsh, rainy winter, allowing excellent water reserves to build up. Spring, cool and dry, slowed the vegetative cycle and brought two minor frost episodes without serious consequences. Finally, the summer season proved mild and dry, offering ideal conditions for slow, even berry ripening.

    Winemaking and aging

For the Camarcanda 2021 vintage, the winemaking process incorporates 25% whole bunches. The grape varieties are fermented and macerated separately to preserve their individual characteristics. Aging begins with twelve months in French oak barrels, followed by an additional six months in large 60-hectoliter oak vats to limit oak influence. After blending, the wine rests for several more months in bottle before release.
