Grattamacco 2023: Characteristics and Tasting Notes
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a bright, deep ruby red colour.
Nose
The bouquet offers great aromatic depth, marked by notes of ripe red fruit such as cherry and pomegranate. This ensemble is delicately underscored by floral touches and earthy nuances reminiscent of the Mediterranean scrubland.
Palate
Dynamic and well-balanced, the palate reveals a vigorous structure supported by lovely tension. It stands out for its remarkable freshness, its pronounced mineral backbone and its fine, ripe tannins, leading to a persistent, elegant finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great red wine pairs beautifully with grilled or sauced red meats, such as a matured rib of beef or a herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also enhance game dishes, such as a wild boar stew, as well as aged hard cheeses like pecorino.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate Grattamacco 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 18 and 20°C, after decanting for one to two hours. With excellent ageing potential, it can be kept in the cellar for around 10 to 20 years.
The Elegance of a Great Tuscan Wine by Grattamacco
The Estate
Founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Grattamacco is a pioneering estate located in Tuscany, on the hills of Bolgheri. Now run by Claudio Tipa and the Tipa-Bertarelli family, the property spans 80 hectares, 28 of which are planted with vines and farmed organically. A true benchmark of the region, this historic estate has established its reputation by playing an active role in the recognition of the local great red wines, skilfully combining agronomic innovation with deep respect for its exceptional terroir.
The Vineyard
The vines used to produce this Bolgheri Superiore grow at an altitude ranging from 100 to 200 metres, facing the sea. With an average age of 25 years, they benefit from a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes and sheltered by the surrounding woodland. The distinctive terroir is made up of calcareous sandstone, sodic white clays and fossil-rich flysch marls. The vineyard is managed with low yields, in the strictest respect for the environment, thanks to organically certified practices in place for over twenty years.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for Grattamacco 2023 are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in open oak vats, accompanied by gentle, regular hand punch-downs. A long maceration allows for slow extraction, refining the tannic structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels before being bottled in July 2025, without prior filtration.
Grape Varieties
This wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese.
