Leads with a nice sweet bay leaf hint, followed quickly by singed cedar and loam before the core of reserved red and black currant fruit finally starts to unfold. Warm earth-framed finish. A touch old school, with some muscular character. This should age nicely. Best from 2024 through 2034. 10,300 cases made.

This shows notes of ripe blackberries and blackcurrants with hints of licorice, cloves, walnuts and chocolate. It has full body and a velvety tannin structure. Juicy and vibrant fruit on the palate with a touch of earthiness. Smooth and delicious. Long, fruity finish. Very pure fruit. Try after 2024.

96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc. Toasted cereals and spice box on the nose, this is a little dominated by wood at the moment. The palate shows better black-fruit purity but the wood remains prominent. Bready and oily in fruit, the profile is heady and very smoky through to a warming, intense finish. (TP)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most potent wines I have tasted from Inglenook in a long time. Readers should be patient, as the 2019 is a mere infant. A rush of black cherry, mocha, licorice, spice and leather builds as this sumptuous, towering wine gradually opens with a bit of aeration. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle, as the grippy tannins need time to soften.

Starting with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, this ruby/plum-hued effort displays attractive currants and savory black cherry fruit as well as notes of tobacco, savory herbs, leather, and earth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's nicely textured, moderately concentrated, and balanced, with outstanding length. 10,608 cases.

The depth and power of this wine is striking from the first moment, and even now after two years in bottle it is fresh out of the gate, barely revving up its engines. Black cherry, fennel, slate, tobacco, cigar box; give it a few more years in bottle to fully smooth out, then enjoy this luscious example of Napa Cab. Winemaker Todd DeVincezi, consultant winemaker Philippe Bascaules, 43% new oak.

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Made from 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple colored. It comes bounding out with exuberant notes of crushed black cherries, juicy blackcurrants, and spice cake, plus touches of espresso, tilled soil, and black olives. The medium-bodied palate is juicy and refreshing, delivering plush tannins and a spicy kick to the finish.

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black raspberries, black plums, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus hints of underbrush and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, with intense, pure black fruit flavors, the fruit is well framed by ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with a skip in its step.

    Description

The richness and structure of a red wine from California

    The estate

Located in the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, Inglenook is a wine estate founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain. The estate's wines quickly earned recognition for their quality and richness.

From 1975 onwards, Francis and Eleanor Coppola gradually acquired the entire estate, with the ambition of making Inglenook an iconic benchmark for California wines. The couple undertook major renovations of the facilities and brought in the renowned winemaker André Tchelistcheff as a consultant, as well as Philippe Bascaules of Château Margaux to oversee the winemaking.

A pioneering estate constantly striving for innovation, Inglenook owes its distinctiveness to its singular and authentic expression of great terroirs, through delicate, refined and perfectly balanced wines. These wines have been acclaimed by numerous critics, as demonstrated in 1990 when Wine Spectator awarded a score of 100/100 to the Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 1941.

    The vineyard

Inglenook tends a 95-hectare vineyard, certified organic since 1991. The vineyard's varied topography reflects the mosaic of terroirs found in Napa Valley and contributes to Inglenook's distinctive character. Since 2015, the estate has undertaken an ambitious programme of replanting an average of 2% of the vineyard each year, ensuring its continual renewal.

    The wine

A great Rutherford wine crafted from a rigorous selection of the estate's finest vineyards, Inglenook's Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to John Daniel Jr. The great-nephew of Gustave Niebaum's wife, who succeeded the founder at the helm of the estate for several years, John Daniel Jr produced the 1941 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon from vine cuttings brought over from Bordeaux by Gustave Niebaum.

    The vintage

A wet winter was followed by a cool spring, encouraging early budbreak and flowering. Although July was cool, the warmer conditions in August and September were ideal for ensuring even, steady ripening.

    Winemaking and ageing

Aged for 19 months exclusively in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new.

    Blend

    Cabernet Sauvignon (96%)
    Cabernet Franc (4%).
