    Decanter

The Corton-Charlemagne from Jean Chartron is rich and sturdy, almost massive. With its ripe pear and apple aromas, hints of spice and butter and notable lack of lemony minerality, it is a departure for this cellar, but delicious nonetheless. Unlike previous years, he has relied exclusively on his own tiny 0.1ha parcel in Aloxe without supplementing it with purchased fruit. He presses the whole clusters and settles briefly before ageing in used barrels. Give this time before opening, and it will provide pleasure for years to come.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2024 Jean Chartron

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals a pale gold hue, enhanced by delicate green tints typical of its youth.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of white fruits, peach and fresh hazelnut. It is enriched with vegetal touches of lime blossom, supported by a pronounced minerality evoking flint and a subtly integrated oakiness.

    Palate
The palate skilfully combines power and elegance. Carried by a fine concentration and a preserved acidity that gives it a refreshing tension, the palate offers a silky texture stretching towards a long, saline finish.

    Food and wine pairing
This great white wine from France pairs perfectly with noble shellfish such as roasted lobster or creamed scallops, delicate fish such as turbot in sauce, as well as refined white meats or aged hard cheeses.

    Service and storage
To fully appreciate the complexity of this 2024 vintage, it is recommended to serve it between 12 and 14°C, taking care to decant it half an hour before tasting. Designed for a very long evolution, this wine requires at least 8 to 10 years of patience before being enjoyed, and can be kept until around 2054.

    The estate
Founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron is a true institution located in Puligny-Montrachet, at the heart of Burgundy. This 14.5-hectare vineyard is now run by the fifth generation, embodied by Jean-Michel Chartron and his sister Anne-Laure. Renowned for its prestigious monopole plots, the estate stands out for its deep respect for terroir. Committed to a strong environmental approach, the family favours organic farming practices and holds High Environmental Value certification, producing wines of exceptional purity.

    The vineyard
The Corton-Charlemagne terroir extends over the highest part of the Montagne de Corton, between 280 and 330 metres in altitude. The vines, averaging around forty years of age, thrive on steep slopes composed of marly limestone, silica and flint. This site benefits from excellent exposure and natural ventilation from a north-easterly wind, preserving the freshness of the grapes and limiting disease pressure. The work is carried out without any chemical products, with natural grass cover and exclusively hand-picked harvests.

    The vintage
2024 stands out for its particularly cool climatic conditions. Spring, marked by humidity, led to strong fungal pressure requiring constant attention. Summer prolonged this coolness with rainy episodes, slowing down the berries' ripening cycle. Fortunately, a milder and more stable September allowed optimal maturity to be reached. Although these weather hazards considerably reduced yields, they favoured the development of remarkably concentrated berries.

    Winemaking and aging
After rigorous sorting and gentle pressing, alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Malolactic fermentation then occurs naturally at a controlled temperature. Aging continues on fine lees for 14 months in barrels, accompanied by lees stirring adapted to the wine's profile, before ending with 4 months of rest in tanks. A light filtration precedes bottling.

    Grape variety
    Chardonnay (100%).
