A slight yeasty, lactic funk plays on this wine's otherwise fresh, lemony and vivacious nose. The palate adds lots of juicy fruit, think ripe, red-cheeked Mirabelle tinged with zesty, limey greenness. Concentrated and bold, the body reveals depth underneath all this fruit, harboring coolness and verve. It's a compelling wine.

The 2019 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is missing a bit of intensity and complexity on the nose compared to its peers. It's muted at first, but it blossoms after ten minutes in the glass. The palate is slightly better with a dried honey and beeswax entry, pithy with good extract, though I would have preferred a little more persistence on the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Chablis 1er Cru "Montmains" 2019 by Jean-Marc Brocard

    Tasting

    Colour
The wine displays a pale yellow hue with silvery highlights and a beautiful brilliance.

    Nose
The nose opens with delicate aromas of acacia blossom and white fruits such as apple and pear. It then evolves towards notes of citrus, peach and sour candy, subtly underscored by a mineral touch and light toasty nuances.

    Palate
The attack reveals a smooth, harmonious texture, carried by a lively, refreshing acidity. There is perfect balance between the richness of the fruit and a typical saline minerality, stretching out into a long, lemony and energetic finish.

    Food and wine pairings
This white wine pairs beautifully with white fish, seafood or a mushroom risotto. It will also be a perfect match for poultry in a cream sauce or mature cheeses such as Comté and goat's cheese.

    Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this Chablis 1er Cru "Montmains" 2019, it is best served at a temperature of between 11 and 12°C. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop favourably until around 2025.

The floral elegance and minerality of a Chablis 1er Cru

    The estate
Founded in 1974 by Jean-Marc Brocard, the eponymous estate is located in Préhy, in the heart of Burgundy, France. Covering up to 200 hectares, this family-run property has established itself as a leading name in its appellation. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic farming since 1997, the estate is now run by Julien Brocard, the founder's son. He upholds a philosophy centred on respect for the terroir and the preservation of nature, producing wines renowned worldwide for their purity and minerality.

    The vineyard
This Chablis 1er Cru comes from the Montmains climat, located on the left bank of the Serein river. The vines, around 30 years old, thrive on a typically Kimmeridgian terroir made up of limestone marl rich in marine fossils. This sector benefits from an ideal windy exposure, which ensures perfectly healthy grapes and preserves their lovely vibrancy. The estate follows respectful farming practices, encouraging soil life through gentle ploughing and the absence of chemical weedkillers.

    The vintage
The 2019 vintage was characterised by hot weather conditions, particularly towards the end of the growing season. Some welcome rainfall at the end of ripening allowed the berries to reach optimal balance. Despite these high temperatures, meticulous vineyard management ensured satisfactory yields and preserved the grapes' characteristic freshness.

    Vinification and ageing
The production of the Chablis 1er Cru "Montmains" 2019 begins with gravity-fed transfers to preserve the integrity of the juice. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts at temperatures controlled between 18 and 20°C, followed by full malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on its lees for 14 months, 70% in large oak casks and 30% in stainless steel tanks, bringing complexity and purity without any marked oak influence.
