    Antonio Galloni

Le Macchiole's 2024 Bolgheri Rosso is aromatic, lifted and wonderfully polished. Crushed flowers, mocha and dried herbs cut through a core of dark-fleshed fruit. This midweight, understated Rosso has a lot to offer. It's the first vintage that includes a touch of Sangiovese, a decision taken to add a touch of freshness.

The 2024 Bolgheri Rosso pours a youthful ruby hue and reflects a subtle shift in style, with the small addition of Sangiovese introduced to enhance freshness. The blend is otherwise roughly 50% Merlot, 20% each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and some Syrah, aged in a mix of concrete and older barrels. Offering notes of bright red fruit, red plum, wildflowers, and sweet herbs, it’s medium-bodied and has lively acidity, even tannins, and a well-defined, fresh profile. Drink 2026-2034.

A full-bodied, intense Bolgheri Rosso by Le Macchiole

    The estate

Founded in 1983 in Bolgheri, Tuscany, by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole now spans 35 hectares of vines spread across twelve parcels. Since Eugenio’s untimely death in 2002, Cinzia Merli has led this family estate, supported by oenologist Luca D'Attoma. An unconventional pioneer, the estate revolutionised Tuscany by favouring grape varieties atypical for the region: cabernet franc, merlot and syrah. Converted to biodynamics since 2010, Le Macchiole has established itself as the absolute benchmark for Italian cabernet franc.

    The vineyard

Bolgheri Rosso 2024 comes from four distinct parcels located in Bolgheri: Vignone planted in 1999, Casanuova established between 2009 and 2013, Sommi dating from 2015, and Puntone created in 2020. The vines are trained using the Guyot and Médoc systems, with a controlled yield of 1000 grams per vine. The vineyard is farmed with respect for the soil’s natural balance, without the use of harmful chemicals.

    The vintage

The year 2024 in Tuscany began with a mild winter and limited rainfall. May saw an increase in rain, which accelerated vegetative growth. The summer was hot, marked by significant morning dew. Harvesting took place from the third week of August through to the last week of September. Merlot required meticulous selection, delivering lower yields but exceptional quality. Syrah developed steadily with generous yields. Cabernet franc and sauvignon ripened evenly at their traditional times, with yields slightly higher than in previous vintages.

    Vinification and ageing

Bolgheri Rosso 2024 was vinified in stainless-steel tanks, with fermentation and maceration lasting 15 days. Ageing took place over a total period of 10 months, split between 60% in third- and fourth-use oak barrels and 40% in concrete. Bottling was carried out in December 2025.
