    Description

The Power and Elegance of a Great Pommard by Maison Louis Jadot

    The estate

Founded in 1859 in Beaune, Maison Louis Jadot is an emblematic name in Burgundy. This historic estate oversees a vast vineyard covering 125 hectares in the Côte d'Or, extending to 270 hectares when including its affiliated properties. Since 1985, the house has belonged to the American group Kobrand, owned by the Kopf family. Today, it is led by Thomas Seiter as president, supported by Thibault Gagey as general manager. Renowned worldwide, the estate stands out for its ambitious environmental transition and its commitment to faithfully expressing each Burgundian terroir.

    The vineyard

The "Grands Epenots" Climat is located in the southern part of the Pommard appellation, at the gates of Beaune. The vines enjoy a beautiful south and south-east exposure, encouraging optimal ripening of the berries. They flourish on deep clay-limestone soils marked by a strong presence of iron. Committed to an eco-responsible approach, the estate has banned synthetic fertilisers and herbicides, favouring mechanical soil work, the planting of hedges to promote biodiversity, and experiments in biodynamics.

    The vintage

The year 2020 stood out in Burgundy for its generally warm weather conditions, resulting in a particularly early growing cycle.

    Winemaking and aging

The estate's philosophy is based on minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to fully express itself. To craft the Pommard 1er Cru "Grands Epenots" 2020, the berries are destemmed and then placed in open vats. Maceration and fermentation last approximately two to three weeks, punctuated by measured punching-down and pumping-over to gently extract colour and tannins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred into French oak barrels, with an appropriate proportion of new wood, for an aging period ranging from 12 to 18 months.

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Pommard 1er Cru "Grands Epenots" 2020 by Louis Jadot

    Tasting

    Appearance
This wine reveals a deep ruby hue that can tend towards garnet, with a beautiful intensity.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of ripe fruits such as black cherry, plum, raspberry and blackberry. The whole is enhanced by gentle touches of spices and liquorice, along with subtle floral nuances reminiscent of violet or dried rose.

    Palate
On the palate, this cru offers a full and elegant texture. The tannic structure is firm and assertive, while retaining a supple and velvety character. The balance is perfectly upheld thanks to a well-judged freshness, leading to a long and refined finish.

    Food and wine pairings

This structured red wine pairs beautifully with characterful meats. It will elevate a roasted or braised lamb, a traditional beef bourguignon, as well as dishes in sauce or game such as venison. When it comes to cheese, it is ideally matched with soft washed-rind cheeses, such as Cîteaux cheese.

    Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting in its youth will help soften its tannins and release its aromas. Endowed with excellent aging potential, it can be enjoyed now or laid down in the cellar for many years to come.
