    Decanter

This is perhaps the archetype of the Bâtard-Montrachet appellation, with ripe apple, melon, and hints of butter, cream, and spice. The texture is rich, creamy, and slightly fat, as is often the case with Bâtard. Latour vinifies the eastern half of this clos, which constitutes 0.43ha directly across the street from Montrachet. The grapes are pressed slowly as whole clusters without rolling the press to get a very clean must. The ferment starts in tank and finishes in cask, where it stays nine months before getting a further six in tank.

    Bruce Sanderson

Though opulent and fleshy, this white is underscored by lively acidity, setting the scene for its peach, pineapple, citronella and butterscotch flavors. Balanced and almost chewy, with ample fruit and toasty oak lining the excellent aftertaste. Combines power and finesse. Best from 2027 through 2038. 280 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Louis Latour Bâtard-Montrachet 2023

    Tasting

    Appearance
The wine reveals a brilliant pale gold hue, subtly flecked with emerald highlights, a sign of fine clarity.

    Nose
The bouquet opens with pronounced floral notes, intertwined with aromas of white peach and lemon zest. Barrel ageing adds a further dimension with hints of vanilla, toasted almond and marzipan, along with delicate smoky and toasty nuances.

    Palate
Ample and generous, the palate offers an opulent, unctuous texture, underpinned by fine mineral tension. Flavours of orchard fruit mingle with notes of spice, vanilla and saline minerality. The long, refined finish lingers on subtle buttery touches.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This white wine is an ideal match for delicate dishes such as foie gras, caviar, or shellfish like lobster and crayfish. It also pairs beautifully with firm-fleshed fish, poultry in a cream and mushroom sauce, or veal dishes.

    Serving and Ageing

To fully appreciate this Bâtard-Montrachet 2023, serve it at a temperature between 12°C and 14°C. This age-worthy wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to develop its complexity until around 2038.

The Richness and Precision of a Burgundy Grand Cru

    The Estate

Founded in 1797, Maison Louis Latour is a historic name in Burgundy. Based in Aloxe-Corton, the house oversees a 48-hectare vineyard, 27 hectares of which are classified as Grand Cru. Now run by Florent Latour, the family business stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and for owning its own traditional cooperage. Crafting wines renowned throughout the world, the estate combines respect for terroir with innovation, notably through its historic gravity-fed winery, to reveal the full elegance of Burgundy's climats.

    The Vineyard

The grapes come from the prestigious Bâtard-Montrachet appellation, located on deep soils of brown limestone, clay and marl. Within this terroir, the estate farms the historic "Clos Poirier" plot, distinguished by the unusual north-south orientation of its vines. Around forty years old, these vines benefit from a gentle east-facing slope, which provides optimal morning sunshine for the ripening of the berries.

    The Vintage

The 2023 vintage was marked by historically warm annual temperatures in Burgundy, mainly due to a particularly mild winter. Favourable water reserves built up before the summer season allowed the vines to retain fine freshness and mineral acidity, yielding berries with perfectly balanced ripeness.

    Winemaking and Ageing

Following hand harvesting, the Bâtard-Montrachet 2023 is vinified entirely in oak barrels, including full malolactic fermentation. Ageing lasts eight to ten months in 100% new French oak barrels with a medium toast, made by the house's own cooperage. This process takes place in the historic cellars of the Corton Grancey winery.
