    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2021 Lucien Le Moine

    Tasting

    Colour
This red wine from France displays a brilliant ruby hue that will move towards deep carmine or black cherry nuances over time.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals, in its youth, notes of strawberry, blackberry, violet, rose and mignonette. Over time, it will evolve towards notes of liquorice, leather, undergrowth and game.

    Palate
The tasting reveals a delicate texture underpinned by a firm structure and velvety tannins. Rich, fleshy and powerful all at once, this cru expresses a lovely fruity intensity marked by ripe red berries and a subtle earthy touch typical of its terroir.

    Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with furred or feathered game meats, a fine rib of beef, or a braised lamb in sauce. It also pairs perfectly with hard cow's milk cheeses such as Époisses, Cîteaux or Ami du Chambertin.

    Service and storage
To fully enjoy this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2021, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. With its solid structure, it boasts great longevity.

The authentic expression of a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru by Lucien Le Moine

    The estate
Founded in 1999, the house of Lucien Le Moine is based in Beaune, at the heart of Burgundy. This estate operates as a highly selective micro-négociant. Its founders and current owners, Mounir Saouma and Rotem Brakin, do not own any Burgundian vineyards but rigorously select the juice right after pressing. Guided by a classic and minimalist philosophy, they favour a pure expression of terroir and ageing potential, placing their production among the region's most essential references.

    The vineyard
This Gevrey-Chambertin comes from the Estournelles-Saint-Jacques climat, ideally situated on the upper part of the slope, at an altitude ranging between 280 and 380 metres. The vines thrive on shallow brown limestone soils, giving this cru a profile that is generally lighter and more elegant than neighbouring plots.

    The vintage
2021 was characterised by very low yields and significant heterogeneity, requiring meticulous work in the vineyards. Despite these challenges, this vintage offers luminous wines, endowed with lovely energy and palpable tension. The discreet acidity is balanced by a fine bitterness, revealing a profile centred on elegance and great transparency of terroir, recalling the characteristics of the 2001 vintage but with greater concentration.

    Winemaking and ageing
The making of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Estournelles Saint-Jacques" 2021 relies on artisanal, low-intervention methods. Ageing takes place entirely on the lees in new fine-grain French oak barrels from the Jupilles forest, with gentle lees stirring carried out several times a month. The naturally cool cellars allow for a slow malolactic fermentation that extends until summer. The wine is finally bottled without any clarification or filtration.
