    James Suckling

So much smoked-bacon character and dusty earthiness make this a striking Cornas, but behind these figures on the stage hangs a curtain of ripe blackberry fruit. Plenty of power and quite a dense tannin base on the palate, but the finish is only moderately dry and this impressive red is already drinkable. Drink now.

The 2019 Cornas Les Arênes has lots of granite-like character (although this comes from a mix of terroirs) in its bouquet garni, morello cherry, spice, and powdered rock and smoky nuances. Beautiful on the palate as well, it’s medium to full-bodied, has ripe yet building tannins, remarkable elegance, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done and just a classic, dark, smoky Cornas to drink over the coming 10-15 years.

Smoky, bacon-like nose; on the palate, you find the bite of the slopes of Cornas, in a cornas style—always a little more rustic than Saint-Joseph but with its inimitable charm.

    The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vigneron and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

    The vineyard

Les Arènes from M. Chapoutier is a Cornas wine from a vineyard partly planted on decomposing granite, locally called "gore", as well as on clay-limestone alluvial soils.

    Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed. The fermentation of a duration of 10 days is followed by a maceration of about 3 weeks. The aging is carried out 80% in oak barrels (100% French) and 20% in concrete vats.

    Blend

    Syrah (100%).
