A superb, sultry red, with power, density and serious mineral lift. Shows a hefty swath of crushed cherry, plum and red currant paste flavors that are overtaken by smoke, iron and graphite. Smolders through a pure, lengthy finish gilded with mesquite smoke, grilled apple wood and hints of mint chocolate. Everything comes together on the mouthcoating, expertly knit palate. Drink now through 2040. 492 cases made, 10 cases imported.

Decanter

Attractive fruity perfume straight away, ripe blackberries. There’s an inner sweetness to the fruit, the alcohol is raised, adding a little more sweetness. Generous roundness, a very accessible and juicy style of Hermitage. Great tannic ripeness and generous in load, but feels a little bit too ripe and easy to promise great future complexity. Pleasure though? Undoubtedly.

What a sensual Hermitage this is. So ripe and so silky on the rich yet beautifully balanced palate. In spite of the enormous depth this has a certain lightness of touch. Very long, velvety finish. And yes, this also has wonderful black fruit aromas with delicate smoky and peppery nuances. From a vineyard with a Rhone sedimentary soil. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Ermitage Les Greffieux is dominated by bold, forward fruit. Blackberries, cassis and blueberries flow in waves here, as this parcel has less granite than L’Ermite and Le Pavillon. It’s full-bodied but still structured, with fine-grained tannins and a long, silky-textured finish.

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier house today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

As a winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the most discerning connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

Les Greffieux by M. Chapoutier, named after the first owner of the plot, is a single-varietal Ermitage wine. The plot located at the foot of the Hermitage hill consists of a terrace of glacial alluvium. This vineyard owes its uniqueness to its subsoil composed of deep clays, giving the wine finesse and aromatic richness, as well as rolled pebbles that restore heat and provide concentration and structure.

Vinification and aging

Harvested at full maturity, the grapes undergo total destemming before vinification in cement tanks. Long maceration to promote gentle extraction of tannins. Exclusive use of runoff juice. The aging, lasting 14 to 18 months, is carried out 100% in barrels (1/3 new, the rest in barrels of one or two wines).
