    James Suckling

Complex nose of smoked bacon, leather, bitter chocolate and pepper, the fruit growing with aeration. Much more blackberry character on the palate than in the nose, and this enables it to easily carry the rather firm structure, the mineral acidity lifting the long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Good aging potential. Drink or hold.

Deep, glistening ruby. Ripe, spice-accented dark berries and pungent flower aromas are sharpened by smoky mineral and black pepper flourishes. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering pliant blackberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors that are complicated by salty olive and cola nuances. Tighten up with air and finishes smooth, spicy and quite long, displaying fine clarity, well-knit tannins and lingering florality. 20% new oak.

Just a hair behind the 2018, the 2019 Côte Rotie Quatuor is nevertheless terrific stuff, offering a rounded, medium- to full-bodied, balanced style as well as classic notes of black raspberries, spice, peppery herbs, and flowers. It opens up with air and is going to benefit from 3–4 years of bottle age. As always, this comes from four different sites and is brought up in 25% new barrels.

    Bettane+Desseauve

A creamy attack on the palate, a luscious blueberry fruit profile, beautiful balance with round, deftly extracted tannins, and a fresh finish.

    La RVF

While the élevage is still slightly present, the wine responds and asserts its beautiful finesse. The balance between the four plots that make up the cuvée is remarkable, with a lovely preserved freshness.

    Description

A lively and floral red wine from Côte-Rôtie

    The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vine grower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the Rhône Valley but also in Roussillon, Australia, Portugal.

    The vineyard

The Quatuor 2019 is a Côte-Rôtie wine that comes, as its name suggests, from a blend of four plots: Côte Brune (altered/fragmented micaschist soils), Côte Brune (gneiss soils), Neve (rocky micaschist soils), and Tupin (migmatite and loamy sand soils).

    Vinification and aging

After hand harvesting, the grapes are destemmed. The vinification is done in raw concrete vats. The alcoholic fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts. During this fermentation, the temperature gradually rises to reach 30-32 °C. The maceration lasts from 4 to 5 weeks with regular pump-overs and then some punch-downs. The lees are worked the last 3 weeks. Daily tasting of the vat allows to adjust the different operations and thus to define the date of racking. Racking from 24 to 48 hours to eliminate the coarsest lees before "hot" barreling in 228-liter Burgundy barrels, 25% to 30% of which are new. Aging from 14 to 18 months depending on the vintages.

    Blend

    Syrah (100 %).
