    Alison Napjus

Delivers delicate notes of dried tea rose, smoke and spices that waft on the nose and through the palate's flavors of golden apple, peach skin, vanilla and a minerally underpinning of flint and saline. Well-knit -- compact at first -- but expanding beautifully, with the flavors lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 197 cases made, 36 cases imported.

A fine layer of toast adds a smoky edge to the fresh lemon and mineral allure. Serious, pure and textured with bright, taut acidity that makes you come back for more. Tangy and fresh. Drink or hold.

Tasting characteristics and advice for Oremus’ Furmint Dry Petracs Single Vineyard 2019

    Tasting

    Color

A bright pale yellow hue, the color reflects the care taken in crafting this furmint.

    Nose

The aromatic bouquet reveals lovely complexity, with notes of pineapple and green apple, highlighted by spicy hints of grated ginger. Star fruit and nectarine fragrances complete the profile, adding an extra fruity dimension.

    Palate

On the palate, this wine charms with its concentration and a saline, mineral structure that is pure and crystalline. Depth and length define the tasting, with an explicit minerality that stretches through to a persistent, saline finish.

    Food and wine pairings

This dry white wine pairs perfectly with seafood and oysters, enhancing their briny freshness. It also accompanies poultry, lean fish and vegetarian dishes with elegance. Its spicy dimension makes it an ideal partner for Asian cuisines with complex flavors, as well as for cream- and mushroom-based dishes.

A mineral and elegant furmint from the Petracs vineyard in Tokaj

    The estate

Founded in 1993 by the Álvarez family, owners of the prestigious Spanish estate Vega Sicilia, Oremus symbolizes the rebirth of the Tokaj region after the fall of communism. Located in the village of Tolcsva in Hungary, the estate spans 115 hectares of Premier Cru classified vineyards. Led since 2021 by Róbert Kindl, Oremus revolutionized the region by introducing, as early as 2000, Tokaj’s first dry furmint wines, paving a new path for this grape variety historically devoted to sweet wines.

    The vineyard

The Petracs vineyard covers four hectares on steep slopes with southern and south-western exposure, at around 200 meters above sea level. Its name comes from Baron Ernest von Petrasch, to whom this plot was attributed in 1762. The soil rests on a volcanic andesite base, rich in semi-precious stones and minerals that give the wine its distinctive minerality. The vines, around 60 years old, are trained in bush vines with a planting density of 7,000 vines per hectare. The steep topography requires entirely manual work, sometimes assisted by horses, thereby perpetuating the ancestral winegrowing traditions of Tokaji.

    The vintage

The winter of 2018-2019 was mild and dry, followed by a cold spring that slightly delayed budbreak. The abundant rainfall in early summer ensured good water supply for the vines. Flowering took place normally despite the cool conditions, while veraison was delayed. From August 15 onward, weather conditions became favorable with dry, sunny days, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes. This balanced vintage is characterized by moderate conditions that encourage the expression of the terroir.

    Winemaking and aging

The Furmint Dry Petracs Single Vineyard 2019 harvest was carried out by hand on September 19, 2019, with a controlled yield of 2,700 kg per hectare. The grapes, transported in 12 kg crates, were gently pressed. Fermentation took place in new French and Hungarian oak barrels at a controlled temperature. The wine then underwent three months of aging in barrels with weekly lees stirring, followed by five months of rest in casks. After racking in August, aging continued for six months in stainless-steel tanks until bottling in February 2020. Total production amounted to 2,363 75 cl bottles and 450 magnums.
