The 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert seems to have put on weight since last tasted from barrel, improving with its élevage. Faint herbal notions and a bit of crushed stone accent black cherries on the nose. In the mouth, this wine is full-bodied, ripe and round, with supple tannins and a long, velvety finish. It's evolved into a really solid example of the cuvée, with a slightly baked-fruit character, but it works.

The 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert is terrific as well. Coming from old vines in the Chassis region, it has a darker ruby/purple hue as well as classic Thalabert black and blue fruits, black olive, smoke, and ground pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it offers fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It will evolve for over two decades.

It offers better character and more emotion than Mule Blanche in white; here we find the Syrah from the Châssis area, with a juicy palate, flavors of dark fruits and violet, and a taut, well-balanced finish.

    Description

A rich and balanced Crozes-Hermitage red wine

    The estate

An emblematic name for the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley, Maison Paul Jaboulet-Aîné was founded in 1834 in Tain L'Hermitage. The renowned oenologist and winemaker Caroline Frey has been running this illustrious house, owned by the Frey family, since 2006. The Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné oversees 125 hectares of vineyards, spread across exceptional appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

The Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage vineyards have been biodynamically managed since 2017.

    The vineyard

The oldest estate in the appellation, Domaine de Thalabert has been owned by Paul Jaboulet Aîné since 1834. Its 45-hectare vineyard is located on the low terraces of the Rhône. The vines, aged between 40 and 60 years old, are planted on a stony soil of limestone origin, producing a fine Crozes-Hermitage wine.

    The vintage

A mild winter, favouring an early budding of the vines, preceded a warm spring with regular rainfall. The flowering period was even and qualitative. July was hot and dry. The harvest took place under very good conditions and enabled the teams to harvest utterly healthy grapes.

    Winemaking and ageing

The grapes were harvested by hand and sorted in the vineyard. Vatting for around 4 weeks with gentle extractions. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, 15% of which were new.

    Blend

    Syrah (100%).

    Storage

This Crozes-Hermitage wine can be laid down until 2040.
