    Wine Spectator

    James Molesworth

Presents a dark and winey mix of black currant, blackberry and fig preserve flavors that meld steadily through the finish along with notes of roasted alder, licorice root and warm earth. On the old school side of the spectrum. Best from 2030 through 2045. 380 cases imported.

Cask sample. Mid to dark purplish crimson. Relatively evolved on the nose. Very sweet and round – positively polished! – on the front palate. With just some very fine tannins on the finish. Not massive in terms of build and not massively ambitious, but this should give pleasure. (JR)

    Description

A Vintage Port that conveys freshness and complexity

    The estate

In 1880, the Ramos house was founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto. Driven by the ambition to produce exceptional Port wines, Ramos Pinto implemented from the outset a demanding quality-focused strategy, from the vineyard to the cellars. To achieve this, he relied on an exceptional terroir by investing in the finest vineyards of the Douro Valley, located in the Duriense region in northwestern Portugal. While each vineyard has its own distinctive features, all contribute to defining the elegant, fruity and complex style of Ramos Pinto.

    The vineyard
Quinta do Bom Retiro Vintage 2018 is a Vintage Port from Quinta do Bom Retiro, located in the valley of the Torto river, a tributary of the Douro river. With 110 hectares planted with old vines averaging 40 years of age, the estate's indigenous grape varieties benefit from an ideal position between 110 and 400 metres of altitude. Planted in terraces or along the slope, the vines are rooted in an experimental site dedicated to studying the best planting techniques for the Douro terroir.

    The vintage
The year 2018 opened with a cold, dry winter marked by very low rainfall. By contrast, early spring brought a significant number of showers and cool temperatures. The months of August and September, crucial for the vine, were particularly hot and dry, allowing the grapes to reach the desired ripeness.

    Vinification
Quinta do Bom Retiro Vintage 2018 was bottled eighteen months after the harvest, immediately revealing very silky tannins and a burst of fruit.

    Blend
    Port Blend.
