Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Vigne Sibi et Paucis 2013 from Sandrone Luciano
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a clear, luminous purple hue enhanced by violet highlights.
Nose
The bouquet shows a certain restraint on opening, characteristic of the wine’s youth, before gradually unfolding with aeration. Aromas of black and red fruits then emerge, evoking black cherry, blackberry and plum, accompanied by notes of violet, licorice and cola. The complexity develops with touches of red flowers, tobacco, black tea, graphite and almonds.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals a structure that is both tight and expansive, supported by excellent acidity. The core of black fruit is backed by ripe, slightly gripping tannins, offering fine length. The finish reveals spicy and mineral notes while the black fruit lingers elegantly.
Food and wine pairings
This Barolo pairs beautifully with braised red meats, game in sauce, dishes featuring Alba white truffles, as well as aged cheeses such as parmesan or pecorino.
Serving and cellaring
The Le Vigne Sibi et Paucis 2013 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2048. Decanting for one to two hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open. Ideally serve at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.
An exceptional Barolo from Sandrone Luciano’s “Sibi et Paucis” approach
The estate
Founded in 1978 by Luciano Sandrone and his wife Mariuccia in Piedmont, this iconic Barolo estate now spans 27 hectares of vineyards spread from Barolo to Serralunga. Since Luciano’s passing in 2024, the estate has been managed by his daughter Barbara, his brother Luca (oenologist), his wife Mariuccia, and his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. Sandrone Luciano stands out for its innovative “Sibi et Paucis” approach, keeping certain Barolos for an additional ten years in the cellar, and for giving equal attention to the three indigenous grape varieties grown: nebbiolo, dolcetto and barbera.
The vineyard
This Barolo is a blend of four distinct plots located in the most prestigious communes of the appellation. The Vignane vineyard in Barolo brings aromatic purity, Villero in Castiglione Falletto lends precision, Merli in Novello offers fruit fullness, while Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba delivers power. The grapes from each plot are harvested, vinified and aged separately before being blended only at the final bottling stage.
The vintage
The 2013 vintage was marked by a dual climatic personality. A cool, rainy spring was followed by a warm, dry summer and autumn. Late budbreak was offset by good fruit set in June. Stable weather conditions from July to October allowed for excellent phenolic development of the grapes. Harvest took place from October 3 to 24, enabling the picking of fruit at optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
The Vigne Sibi et Paucis 2013 underwent spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open steel vats. Malolactic fermentation and aging took place in 500-liter French barrels. This special “Sibi et Paucis” cuvée benefited from extended aging of an additional six years after its initial release date of September 2017, under optimal conditions in the estate’s cellar.
Grape variety
100% nebbiolo.
