The Elegance of a Great Burgundy Pinot Noir by Au Pied du Mont Chauve
The Estate
Founded in the late 2000s, the Au Pied du Mont Chauve brand embodies the excellence of the Picard family in Burgundy. Now led by Francine Picard, the estate spans thirty-five hectares across prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Beaune. The estate is distinguished by its deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture and a natural approach to winemaking. Under the guidance of its current owner, the estate produces wines of remarkable precision, faithfully reflecting the richness and complexity of their native climats.
The Vineyard
The Clos des Fiètres parcel is located mid-slope, at the heart of the village of Aloxe-Corton. Sheltered within a walled clos, the vines—over a century old—thrive on reddish, stony soils composed of brown limestone, rich in marl and potassium. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with natural grass cover and mechanical soil work. Pruning is carried out using the simple guyot method with long canes, accompanied by careful bud thinning.
The Vintage
The year 2020 was marked by a very early growing cycle, with high summer temperatures, low rainfall, and significant water stress. These weather conditions called for great patience in determining the ideal harvest date. The result is a classic vintage yielding concentrated, fresh, expressive red wines dominated by black fruit.
Winemaking and Aging
To craft this Corton Grand Cru "Clos des Fiètres" 2020, the grapes are hand-harvested in small crates and then sorted on a table. The berries are transferred to temperature-controlled open vats using small stainless steel carts to avoid any crushing. After traditional Burgundian winemaking, the wine is aged for fifteen months, split equally between new oak barrels and barrels that previously held a 2019 vintage wine.
