Decanter

Although the colour is not as deep as the 2019, the mulberry and plum fruit aromas are every bit as intense, with hints of violets, spice and earth. The texture is tightly wound and vigorous, with impressive density, tannic grip and length. 2022 was the fourth year of organic production, now certified, and the first made in the new winery. The grapes were picked from 1–6 September; 80% were fermented as whole clusters to produce another superb wine with immense ageing potential.

James Suckling

Zekun Shuai

A stunning wine marked by finesse and delicacy. This is ethereal but also deep, with moss and mineral aromas followed by delicate yet naturally racy sweet berries, decadent roses, spices and forest floor. Almost full-bodied for a pinot, but this is much more about texture than anything else. Tense, round and elastic, with a ripe but minerally finish that expands at the end and goes on and on. Real depth in an airy, super-delicate way. 80% whole bunches and 20% new oak barrels. So good to drink now, but this is age-worthy and is likely to morph into something stunning in a decade.

Jancis Robinson

Matthew Hayes

Eleven different parcels from around the clos vinified and matured separately. Always assembled together as one lot. The vintage defines the character and yield of each. Cask sample. Dark-mid ruby. A different beast. Cassis, loganberry and blackberry on the nose and palate. Floral and vegetal notes, too – green freshness from the stems. Seductively ripe and full-bodied. Showing well today but will inevitably close. There’s real potency in this. Solid as a rock but so seductive, too. (MH)

La RVF

80% whole-cluster fermentation and 20% new barrels in the grand cru; a perfumed wine with incredible textural delicacy, intense and pointillist right down to the goldsmith-like precision of its tannins: a soulful wine whose distinguished imprint lingers long.

An elegant Burgundy Grand Cru of rare intensity

The estate

The Domaine des Lambrays, established in Morey-Saint-Denis in Burgundy, traces its roots back to 1365, when Clos des Lambrays appears in the archives of the Abbey of Cîteaux. The modern estate was born in 1836 thanks to wine merchant Louis Joly, who reassembled the fragmented clos after the Revolution. In 1981, Clos des Lambrays attained Grand Cru status. Owned by the LVMH group since 2014, it marked the group’s first acquisition in Burgundy. The estate is defined by its exceptional history and its walled terroir enclosed by stone walls, producing wines of remarkable intensity and elegance.

The vineyard

Clos des Lambrays is a near-monopoly and represents the largest area of Grand Cru vines in the entire Côte de Nuits. Spanning 8.7 hectares in a single contiguous plot, this Burgundian vineyard unfolds majestically at 250 meters above sea level, benefiting from optimal exposure and excellent ventilation. The clay-limestone soils give the wines outstanding depth and complexity.

The vintage

Budbreak took place on April 8, two days ahead of the average. Flowering occurred on May 28, ten days earlier than usual. A humid June with 150mm of precipitation favored vegetative growth, while July and August proved very dry and sunny with only 33mm of rain, slightly delaying ripeness. Harvesting took place from September 1 to 5, 2022.

Vinification and aging

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2022 underwent a long three-week alcoholic fermentation in wooden vats. Vinification is carried out entirely by gravity using indigenous yeasts. The proportion of whole clusters reaches 80%. Aging continues for 19 months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new oak.

Grape variety

100% pinot noir.
