Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Oro 2011 from Domaine Peyre Rose
Tasting
Color
The color shows a deep golden-yellow hue, highlighted by amber and honeyed reflections that attest to the wine’s long maturation.
Nose
The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity. It opens with delicate floral notes alongside candied fruit, dried apricot and quince. With aeration, aromas of hazelnut, beeswax and subtle resinous touches emerge, complemented by a chalky minerality characteristic of the terroir.
Palate
The attack is refined and precise. The smooth, voluptuous texture envelops the palate with breadth, carried by flavors of yellow fruits and tropical notes. The balance between creamy richness and the mineral tension brought by Rolle lends the whole a striking elegance. The finish, of exceptional length, expresses a lovely saline, mineral freshness that brings brightness and persistence.
Food and wine pairings
This white wine is an ideal match for roasted free-range poultry with mushrooms or truffle. It also pairs beautifully with line-caught sea bass with beurre blanc sauce, scallop risotto, foie gras, or well-aged Comté.
Serving and cellaring
The Oro 2011 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 12 and 13°C. Aeration for one to two hours before serving allows the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity. This wine can be enjoyed until around 2036.
A Languedoc white wine of remarkable complexity and longevity
The estate
Marlène Soria, owner of Domaine Peyre Rose, acquired this property in 1973 on the heights of Saint-Pargoire, in the Languedoc. After a career in real estate, she decided in the early 1980s to plant vines on this garrigue terroir. The first harvest took place in 1988. Quickly recognized by international critics, notably Robert Parker, she received in 1994 the title of "Personality of the Year" from La Revue du Vin de France. Today, the estate covers about twenty-four hectares and produces wines farmed organically, characterized by exceptionally long aging before release.
The vineyard
The plots dedicated to the production of Oro are located on the coteaux du Languedoc, at high elevation. The clay-limestone soils, rich in rounded stones and friable rock, rest on a limestone substratum that gives the wine its distinctive minerality. The Mediterranean climate, tempered by altitude, helps preserve the grapes’ natural freshness despite generous sunshine. Deliberately limited yields and hand harvesting ensure optimal quality of the fruit picked.
Vinification and aging
After hand harvesting and gentle pressing, the Oro 2011 ferments in stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. The wine then undergoes an exceptionally long aging period of ten to twelve years in tanks and large oak vats, followed by several additional years in bottle at the estate. This extended maturation, totaling around fifteen years before release, allows the wine to develop unique aromatic complexity and a remarkable texture.
Grape varieties
Rolle, Roussanne and Viognier, complemented by small amounts of Terret-Bourret, Ugni Blanc and Clairette.
