Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 Domaine Ponsot

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep imperial purple hue, appearing both dense and translucent.

Nose
Remarkably pure, the bouquet opens with aromas of red and black cherries, plums, rose petals and liquorice, underscored by a delicate smoky touch. With aeration, an evident minerality emerges, accompanied by notes of blackcurrant, truffle, leather and undergrowth, along with subtle hints of aniseed and green tea.

Palate
Harmonious and beautifully full-bodied, the palate offers a core of ripe fruit supported by remarkably fine extraction. The tannins, powerful yet velvety, are perfectly balanced by lively acidity and a penetrating minerality with saline accents. The finish is exceptionally long and complex, evolving towards superb earthy nuances.

Food and Wine Pairing

This great red wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry or poultry in a red wine sauce, roast lamb served in its own juices, a fine côte de bœuf or a platter of soft-rind cheeses.

Service and Storage

Endowed with remarkable ageing potential, this Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 requires patience and can be cellared until around 2052, with optimal drinking recommended from 2033 onwards.

Other Characteristics

This wine benefits from cutting-edge technology to guarantee its authenticity and optimal preservation: an innovative cork that prevents oxidation, a thermochromic label patch that changes colour above 28°C, and an NFC chip ensuring complete traceability of the bottle.

The Elegance and Depth of a Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin by Domaine Ponsot

The Estate

Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot in Morey-Saint-Denis, France, Domaine Ponsot is a true institution in Burgundy. With over 150 years of history behind it, the estate has distinguished itself through its pioneering approach and absolute respect for terroir. Today, the estate is led by Rose-Marie Ponsot, supported by technical director Alexandre Abel. True to the philosophy that "less is more," the estate favours minimal intervention and natural methods, while also embracing cutting-edge technology to authenticate its bottles, elevating its wines to the very summit of the Côte de Nuits.

The Vineyard

The Chapelle-Chambertin comes from a confidential half-hectare plot. The vines, around forty years old, thrive on shallow soils composed of clay and limestone, resting on a bedrock of crinoidal limestone. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable farming principles, with Royat cordon pruning. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting performed directly on the vine to ensure optimal freshness of the berries and to preserve the site's natural biodiversity.

The Vintage

The year 2022 stood out for its particularly hot and dry climate. Following a dry winter and a mild spring that encouraged early flowering at the end of May, June saw an early heatwave. Intense storms at the end of that same month brought welcome rainfall, replenishing the soil's water reserves. July and August were then marked by intense sunshine and a dry heat dome, bringing the grapes to an exceptional level of ripeness.

Winemaking and Aging

The winemaking of the Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 is characterised by a gentle extraction designed to preserve the natural elegance of the terroir. Maceration lasts on average two to three weeks in temperature-controlled oak vats, with fermentation triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels averaging around twenty years old, with the estate completely eschewing the use of new wood.
