Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Mauro Molino's Barolo "Gallinotto" 2022

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals an attractive red hue of medium intensity, typical of its youth.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves complex, layering scents of sweet red fruits, kirsch and black berries. These are interwoven with subtle notes of orange peel, spice and caramel, along with refreshing touches of mint and eucalyptus.

Palate
Full-bodied and lingering, the palate offers a lovely minerality supported by bright acidity that perfectly balances the density of the ripe, supple tannins. The finish stretches out on elegant citrus notes.

Food and wine pairing

This Italian red wine pairs wonderfully with rich, flavourful dishes. It will beautifully complement braised or roasted meats such as duck, veal or game. It also goes perfectly with mushroom-based dishes, pasta with white truffles, and characterful cheeses such as Parmesan or Gorgonzola. However, it is best avoided with spicy dishes.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, this wine should be served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. With excellent aging potential, it is best enjoyed starting around 2028.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content above 13%.

The elegance and mineral complexity of a great Barolo by Mauro Molino

The estate

The story of the Mauro Molino estate began in 1953 in the prestigious Piedmont region of Italy. While the family's roots run deep, it was in 1982 that the estate truly began its rise in quality under Mauro's guidance. Today, his children, Matteo and Martina Molino, passionately run this 16- to 20-hectare vineyard. Devoted champions of their terroir, they carry on a philosophy centred on environmental respect, holding organic farming certification, and practise meticulous parcel-by-parcel winemaking to reveal the unique identity of each cru.

The vineyard

The Gallinotto cru comes from a restored plot located at altitude in the Berri area, southwest of La Morra, an emblematic commune of the Barolo appellation. Facing south and south-southwest, the vines enjoy ideal sun exposure and offer a panoramic view of the Alps. The terroir stands out for its clay-limestone soils rich in marl, giving the grapes remarkable minerality and optimal drainage.

The vintage

2022 proved to be a pleasant surprise, exceeding initial expectations. Conditions allowed for a harvest of excellent quality, marked by great consistency and impressive depth, with picking taking place in early October.

Winemaking and aging

The production of this wine follows a rigorous protocol designed to preserve the freshness of the fruit. After the harvest, the berries undergo maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks for about ten days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for eighteen to twenty-four months, split equally between used barriques and large foudres, to refine its structure without imparting excessive oak influence to the juice.

Grape variety

100% Nebbiolo.
