Description
Tasting Characteristics and Advice for the Clos de Vougeot 2020 by Pierre Girardin
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a bright garnet-red color.
Nose
Expressive, the nose reveals aromas of fresh red fruits such as cherry and blackberry, enhanced by notes of coffee and licorice.
Palate
On the palate, this wine charms with its breadth and generosity. Supple, well-integrated tannins provide a velvety texture, while the deliciously long, fruit-driven finish delivers remarkable aromatic persistence.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Clos de Vougeot pairs perfectly with red meats in sauce such as duck in blood sauce or lamb with prunes. It also elegantly complements furred game such as venison, as well as beef roasts and grilled cuts of meat. Aged Burgundian cheeses also make excellent pairings.
Serving and Cellaring
The Clos de Vougeot 2020 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 16°C. Decanting for one hour before tasting is recommended. This wine will happily wait a few years before reaching its peak and can be cellared until around 2035.
A Burgundy Grand Cru Crafted by a Rising Star of the Côte de Beaune
The Estate
The Domaine Pierre Girardin was established in 2016 by Pierre-Vincent Girardin, representing the thirteenth generation of winemakers in his family. Located in Meursault, Burgundy, the estate now spans 4.5 hectares of vines across some of the finest appellations of the Côte de Beaune. Pierre-Vincent Girardin, owner and head of the estate, is recognized as a rising star in the region. He farms his vines with a strict limitation of chemical inputs and is committed to a gradual conversion to organic farming. The estate stands out for its low-intervention approach, favoring the expression of terroir and vintage.
The Vineyard
Clos de Vougeot is one of the most prestigious grand cru appellations of Burgundy, located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits between Chambolle-Musigny and Flagey-Échézeaux. Founded around 1110 by Cîteaux Abbey, this vineyard covers approximately 50 hectares divided into around one hundred plots. The soils are made up of limestone and clay-limestone, creating a mosaic of distinct soil conditions. This geological diversity gives the wines great complexity and a classic expression of Burgundian terroir.
The Vintage
The 2020 vintage benefited from favorable weather conditions, enabling optimal ripening of the grapes. Harvesting was carried out entirely by hand, with strict selection to keep only the finest fruit.
Winemaking and Aging
The Clos de Vougeot 2020 was vinified using a low-intervention approach, allowing the vintage and terroir to express themselves fully. Fermentations were conducted slowly, and extractions were carried out gently. The wine then underwent several months of aging in carefully selected oak barrels, without filtration prior to bottling in order to preserve its natural complexity.
Grape Variety
