Description

Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Tasting Notes

Colour
The 2024 vintage reveals a deep colour, enhanced by delicate purple hues.

Nose
Particularly expressive and generous, the bouquet opens with aromas of red fruits such as redcurrant and raspberry, mingled with hints of black cherry. It is then enriched with floral notes of dried lavender, herbaceous touches of sage, as well as spicy, toasted and balsamic accents reminiscent of eucalyptus and clove.

Palate
This bright and charming wine offers a full attack and lovely vibrancy. Its freshness is well defined, supporting a harmonious and muscular structure. The tannins are firm, grainy and velvety all at once, leading to a savoury, tightly knit finish with long persistence on the fruit.

Food and Wine Pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a rib of beef or a herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also beautifully complement Mediterranean-style slow-cooked dishes, game preparations served with reduced sauces, as well as long-matured hard cheeses.

Serving and Cellaring

With its lovely structure, Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 is a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, but it also has the ageing potential to be cellared and enjoyed until around 2034.

A generous, remarkably precise great red wine from Tuscany

The Estate

Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is located on the coast of Tuscany. This estate of around 97 hectares quickly established itself as an essential reference among Bordeaux-inspired great wines in Italy. Today, the estate is wholly owned by the Frescobaldi family, who continue to pursue excellence through integrated and sustainable viticulture. A true prestige brand with international renown, the estate skilfully combines the maritime influence of its terroir with the nobility of its grape varieties to create wines of remarkable precision.

The Vineyard

The vines used for this cuvée come mainly from the estate's youngest plots, located at the heart of the Bolgheri region. The terroir benefits from a Mediterranean climate tempered by breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines grow at low altitude on gently sloping hillsides, rooted in a mosaic of well-drained soils composed of stony limestone, sand, silt and clay. The vineyard is managed according to integrated viticulture principles, encouraging natural cover crops and organic fertilisation.

The Vintage

2024 stands out for its early character. A mild, rainy winter allowed for an excellent start to the vine's growth cycle, supported by regular rainfall. From the end of June onwards, warm, sunny weather set in, favouring optimal ripening. Véraison took place in ideal conditions at the end of July. In mid-August, some localised storms brought much-needed moisture before the harvest began in September, benefiting from an alternation of sunshine, coolness and light rain.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates before undergoing a double manual sorting and optical sorting. After gentle pressing, each grape variety and each plot is vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at between 22 and 26°C in stainless steel and concrete vats over around ten days, followed by a maceration period of 10 to 15 days. Malolactic fermentation partly takes place in vats and partly in barrels. Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2024 is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (30% new and 70% one- or two-wine barrels). The blending of this Italian wine takes place after eight months, before returning to barrel for a further seven months, followed by six months of bottle ageing before release.
